John Ryan at the FA

John Ryan appears in front of the FA on a disrepute charge in relation to the referee at the recent Portsmouth home game.

I am asking the supporters of both sides to start a twitter campaign in support of JR. Those who were at the game and those, like me who have had to rely on the video, know that none of the four Pompey goals should have been allowed. Even the most ardent Pompey fans at the game, accepted the injustice of the decisions made by ref Mick Russell.

Please, those of you who do tweet, please start a campaign in favour of JR, we must not let bad referees get away with these decisions. I know I was against JR saying what he did, when he did and how he did, but he was honest and genuine in his remarks.

Let's get behind JR before Tuesday.

Micky, Hound,

I have now received a response. The response solely provided me with the FA's view on the use of social media sites and how action can be taken against people misusing them - it seems like a standard statement. I am totally confused because the response seems completely unrelated to the contents of my communication towards the FA and I have never used a social networking site in my life. Anyway, congratulations to the 2 of you on the progress you have made so far in getting some answers.

Just thought you might like to know what happened to a Baseball umpire over here. Bob Davidson got into a big onfield row with Charlie Emanuel the Phillies manager. Apparently the row was very bad and BOTH have been suspended and fined by Major League Baseball.

This umpire last season had a Milwaukee Brewers supporter thrown out of the ground for shouting at him that he was useless. Can you see that happening at Old Trafford or The Emirates, how canyou throw out 65,000 at one go?

Here is the latest from the FL:

"Michael,

Thank you for your email regarding the performance of the referee at the Doncaster Rovers v Portsmouth match.

Although we are unable to respond on each individual incident, we can advise that the performances of all officials are constantly monitored by way of club and assessor reports, the match video or DVD and, at some grounds, the Prozone statistics. The match is also analysed by the Referees' Manager, a referees' coach and the referee and, despite the perception of some, match officials are most accountable for their performance. Your email was forwarded to the Referees' Manager who has indicated that the referee and his coach have undertaken a review of this game and the incidents you refer to.

It is worth stating that referees will make errors of judgement in a match in the same way that players do. They make their decision based on years of training and experience and what they see at that moment in time, from a position different from anyone else in the ground - they can only act on what they see, assisted by the other match officials and not everyone will agree with the decisions they take.

Contrary to expectations, the Referees' Manager will not attempt to support a referee out of sheer loyalty. It is his responsibility through Professional Game Match Officials to identify training needs of not only individual referees but also of all National Group officials. The Manager also works with his group in a bid to constantly improve standards in a game which has become faster and more frenetic over recent years. Every match is recorded and referees are under closer scrutiny than ever before.

With regards to the points you raise surrounding Mr Ryan, disciplinary action against any club or a member of club staff falls under the jurisdiction of the FA's disciplinary committee and neither The Football League nor the Referee's Manager can make comment.

Thank you for contacting The Football League

Kind regards

Amanda

Thanks Micky, good to know that at least the referee has reviewed the dvd with his coach. I imagine that it was uncomfortable viewing for him. Let's hope that any learning points are taken on board!

Unfortunately a waste of time Micky. When I was at several Rugby League clubs, we had a surefire way of not getting a bad referee again. We gave them top marks and said how good they were, we never saw them again.

NY:
In your cynical mode today? OK, it may be considered a waste of time in that it will not change anything, but at least the FA (once) and the FL (twice) replied. These replies were mainly what used to be known as "bed bug letters" (the youngsters may not remember the infamous "send bed bug letter" episode in the 1950s), but at least I got replies. If enough start complaining, maybe there will be changes.

The Timbers finally won yesterday, but Kris Boyd did not score, although a header of his was deflected by a Chicago defender and was determined an "own goal". So far, not much return for the $1.25 million they are paying him. Maybe the Timbers should hire Heffs!

Not cynical Micky, just realistic, it apperas that football referees very seldom get punished. When they DO, lower clubs are also punished, as the referee is not suspeded, just dropped to
a lower league.

A player who is sent off or has too many yellow cards actually misse a game, what's the difference?

Glad to see you "Boyd" by the Timbers winning.
