Mcllroy Painfully Honest

"There's no point in changing your game for one week a year."

"I'm not a fan of golf tournaments [where] the outcome is predicted so much by the weather."

"It's not my sort of golf"

"I'm looking forward to getting back playing in Akron, playing the PGA and getting back into some nice conditions"

Well well well. I'm always crying out for something other than 'I missed a lot of putts' or 'i'm hitting the ball real good' in golfing interviews, but hearing Mcllroy's words didn't sit too comfortably, for myself at least.

Isn't the Open Championship more than 'one week a year'? The oldest championship on the calendar deserves a bit more respect doesn't it? What about its proximity to home? The British golfing crowd love anyone European!

And no-ones asking you to remodel your swing, but great players can hit low fizzing irons off the tee in stiff breeze, or chip and runs into undulating greens. Tiger Woods at Hoylake springs to mind.

The weather separates the men from the boys, and isn't he from N.Ireland? He grew up in these conditions for goodness sake. I'm sure he didn't mean this, but his comments almost reduce the Open Championship and Clarke's wonderful victory to the weather and luck. Clarke shot 70 in arguably the worst conditions all week on the final day, a deserving Open Champion.

Maybe i'm being harsh, at least he was honest, and I would be a bit grouchy after the penalty on the 7th.

the older he will get he will learn how to change his game to suit the courses and conditions.just like tiger did a few years in to his career and after watching tom watson at the open.all you need is a good game plan and know how to play the wind etc.it will come for rory with experience

I've not grown up on links courses and i'm sure the majority of us here hav'nt also. Whatever Rory says is good by me. How many Majors are played on links? I'll never win a Major and i'm guessing that none of us here will. Rory, crack on bud

So if he's behind a tree and cant go over it, he wont adjust his stance/swing to play a shot under it? Course he will. Every round we adjust our game to suit the shot required.

Just sounds sour grapes from young Rory.

Rory is a major champion. Not a bad start is it? Ask the world number one, and the world number too, and a guy who won the european tour 8 times, and Casey, and Poulter, and Rose, and Garcia how many they have between them. Rory gave his opinion and it's great to hear them. He will play in many Opens, and many Ryder Cups, and he will give 100 percent. He doesn't have to like them though. He may get to like them in time but who cares.

"How many Majors are played on links?"

Well...1 out of 4 is a pretty big proportion. I can't believe playing the Masters is that similar to playing the PGA or US Open.

He must have the ability to adapt his game.

If we look at the last 7 majors, Pebble Beach is a links course, and Whistling Straits is set up for links play, so that would be 4 of the last 7?
