Todays the day, 1st game match thread

The 2012 T20 world cup is finally here and as others have said probably the most open international cricket tournament of all time. It hard to pick a winner as most of the teams are full of players who have had T20 success; either in one of the many domestic tournaments or internationally. So many star players are going to be on show and even if only half of them play well that will still make for some amazing cricket.

So which player are you most looking forward to seeing play, one of your own or another teams star. For me its a curly haired Sri Lankan fast bowler, he may have been around for a while but Lasith Malinga is still knocking peoples stumps out of the ground on a regular basis. Its no mystery what he is going to do but batsmen and often real good ones just can't handle his yorkers. For me in cricket there is nothing better than seeing real good fast bowling and this guy is one of the best.

Lets hope for a great tournament and a Wanderer74 win in the fantasy league, cos you know that's what we all want right?

I was going to put Mendis in my team

Looking like mendis would have been a very good pick Kash, their lining up to give him their wicket.

can someone explain how the super eight draws are already out? I thought we can only know that after all the group stages matches are over?

Do you mean fixture list or teams through to the super 8?

super 8 list. apparently there is 2 grps in super 8, and group 2 has India, pakistan, SA and australia. And i dont understand how we have already got that list when grp stages havent even been played?

I don't think we have its just the tv coverage are acting like the minnows don't exist, they are assuming those will be the teams. They did it in the build up programme last night showed both super 8 groups as the big teams.

Viru,

The group stages are correct as you state. Its got nothing to do with tv coverage. It just easier for the fans and simplified. All top 8 teams have a number allocated against them. These were drawn and that's how you come up with those groups.

So as an indian fan if you wanted to buy all indian tickets for super 8s you'd know exactly where and when your team is playing. If a minnow qualifies at the expense of one of the big teams, then they take over thier allocation. It's a very good system that's worked well in.last 3 world cups. Credit to ICC where its due.

oh so afridi if all the top 8 qualify, then regardless of where they are placed on the current group, we will have grp 2 to be pakistan, india, SA and Aus? ah damn so if minnows dont cause upsets grp2 will be a killer grp, and also grp A will be one hell of a competitive grp.

Yes Viru, doesn't matter if you finish first or second. The groups will stay the same. But remember all 8 teams will carry the points forward for games played against the other team that's also qualified from your group.

For the Pakistani fans, IF we progress our fixtures are as follows;

Friday 28th Sept - saffers day
Sunday 30th - India night
Tuesday 2nd Oct - Aussies day
