Understeer and Oversteer Explained

Under/Over Steer is experienced when a car is cornering. It results from a lack of grip from the tyres.

When the front tyres start to loose grip, when a driver attempts to take a corner, then the car tries to “PUSH" on in a straight line. Understeer can be corrected easily by the driver slowing down until the grip is restored.

Oversteer is a result of the rear tyres loosing grip (LOOSE) and can actually be used as a driver advantage in order to corner faster.

Road car designers prefer understeer because it is safer but slower.

Racing engineers prefer oversteer.

I doubt if there is any driver that would prefer understeer unless they are not up to it.

Anyone that paid the slightest attention to the 2012 season would know that JB spent most of it complaining about understeer.

The same poster declared that the MP4-28 was an evolution of the 2012 car when quite obviously it isn't.

Indeed he does.

Because of his driving style, he's always gonna feel more comfortable in a car with more rear end grip than front, as it's easier to guide the car round a corner that way.

Although, as WTCBU rightly pointed out, JB did complain about understeer for most of the first half odd 2012 due to the fact that too much of it can put you at a disadvantage due to the bigger drop in speed needed to get your grip back.

As far as personal taste goes in video games, when playing a game like Grid, Dirt or Forza I'd much rather have oversteer, but when I'm playing an F1 game, I feel much more comfortable with understeer. :/
