Xbox One abandons DRM

M$ has cracked. No more used game restrictions, no more 24hr online check in, and no more restrictions of sharing.

Clearly they are getting desperate now (probably the biggest indicator is that it's system is getting crushed by the PS4 in pre order sales), and are willing to listen to it's fans.

But that asks the question, does that mean this cloud idea was just DRM in disguise, or that it was really going to enhance the system graphically? The former I'd say.

MS has listened to the consumer because they now realise they would lose out to PS4 if they hadn't, but let's say the X1 now becomes the dominant console, how long will it be before they impliment these restrictions again? We know they intended to, and I reckon they intend to in the future.

Does kinect have to be connected on at all times? I thought you were able to switch the camera and mic off?

yeah, but my understanding is that it has to still be connected, might be wrong, but even worse then, coz I'll buy it, disconnect it and put it away in a draw somewhere, waste of money.
I just wanna chill and play games, don't wanna wave my hands around like some caaaant, or talk to my xbox like some caaaant

Bubbly

They would not legally be allowed to impose the restrictions again after selling it without them.

You can turn of the mic and camera, but there will be a ten second buffer for the mic listening for voice commands, unless you turn that off too.

I don't think this will change much. The people who really cared to begin with won't switch now. They will still both be pretty evenly.

Thing is, everyone complaining about the Xbox having the potential to be watching you has a smartphone with a front facing camera or a tablet with a camera or a laptop with a camera that can all do the same thing!

As long as you have the choice ala Steam no problem as it would slowly take over and then M$ would have exactly what they wanted - they just need to be patient and give people the choice rather than to force. Just like Steam they would then be able to sit back and say "I told you so", but trying to force people like this just makes people rebel

Yeah, especially when there are other options, which seem better too many.

Steam was sold on the fact that it was so good that even with these restrictions, it was worth it. Xbox doesn't have that yet, but there is no doubt both xbox and playstation will go down this route.

Microsoft still have work to do but this was a victory for consumers.
M$ have learnt a humbling lesson.

Yeah laptop cameras get hacked on a regular to watch unsuspecting users. Although mainly women get targeted for obvious reasons, and kids by peados.
