Paulinho bid

He is Quoted on BBC sports this morning saying that we have made a bid for him with rumors of £17 m being tossed around, is he worth that and do we need him, is he any different from what we have at present?

N17,

My (and HRH's) point exactly. A squad packed with players who multi-task isn't ideal because there are bound to be some who aren't good in any role (think of Gutierrez and perch at newcastle). 3 or 4 among the 25 who can cover different positions is fine

So we're all agreed.

As many specialists in each position as possible, backed up by a few high quality yet versatile players, then the kids

Agreed.

Most teams have a core of 17-19 'first team' level players, with the rest made up of either squad players or promising kids. Among all of these you'll invariably have a few who can play well in more than 1 position

There used to be such a thing as utility players, these were players who were very good in one position, but pretty useful too in other roles.

Take Dave Mackay for instance, he has played for Spurs in midfield & as a stand in centre half. Paul Madeley at Leeds could play anywhere and look at home, in fact the only position he never played at Leeds was goalkeeper!

If you had two or three of this type of player then you could cover virtually any eventuality. In our current squad the most versatile players in my opinion are Bale, Verthongen, Thudd (although too slow in midfield) Holtby & possibly Sigurdsson.

How on earth can you consider thudd as versatile?!?!

He can play cm and at a stretch he could play cb. That's it
