changes before next test

I think its, pretty obvious we got out of this one by the skin of our teeth. Play the same team at Lords and we could get scalped next time.
So I'd like to see two changes - either Bresnan or Tremlett for Finn, who was simply awful in this test - and Compton for Bairstow, who I think was a bit out of his depth. I hate to say, that being a Yorkshireman, but its true.
As to if Compton opens with Cook, not sure on that one ...

Tbh other than 2 batsman none of them looked comfortable in the second innings and I think Bairstow ciuld take a game away from aussies if we need to on the last 2 days compared to Compton

"So, what's wrong with the OP suggesting Bres or Tremlett for currently out-of-form Finn?"

Yeah thanks Robbie - I think its ridiculous to sit on our laurels and expect to get away with that performance again. Yes, Jimmy Anderson was fabulous, so was Bell, but the rest of 'em need to up their game a bit. To say we nearly thrashed 'em like Rameses has done is just silly talk, get some perspective man. Aussies will think they were unlucky and will be up for the next game.

It will probably depend on the Lords wicket I’d have thought. Another like Trent Bridge and Finn offers little. A pitch with a bit more bounce he offers something our other options don’t.

Bairstow deserves another test at least in my opinion but I’ve got no doubt that Compton will get another chance in the future.

I keep hearing Finn is going to be dropt for the next game, but as much as I gave him stick, Finn is a quality bowler, the pitch was a dry slow pitch which was thought would be great for Swanny but didn't happen, yes Finn bowled allot of short balls but a fast pitch and Finn is you're man, but if the wicket is the same as we have just seen then Bresnan will be brought in.

I don't see Engalnd making two changes to a winning side its not there style, so Bairstow will keep his place for now. No matter what though whoever bowls will need to help out Jimmy because he can't keep bowling overs like that he will pick up a injury which is the last thing we would all want. Broad was good but Swanny needs to improve far to many full toss balls bolwed and mark my words Aussies will be up for this next one so we need to bowl and bat at our best

Ah well if Bresnan plays then three Yorkies in the team - can't do better than that i guess!!

At different times within my own memory of the game England have suffered two different kinds of selection problems.

1) A player was only one bad match away from being dropped.

2) The team was a closed-shop, where selection appeared to have very little linkage to performance.

Both problems were toxic to sustained sucess.

In my estimation the selector's ability to steer a steady course between the two extremes has played an important part in England's rise over the last decade.

So a week ago, the selectors thought Bairstow had something to offer.

If they change their mind now, after just one match - and one in which many batsmen with more experience than Bairstow struggled - then that's surely an implied vote of no-confidence in themselves as judges of cricketing talent, isn't it?

So on Bairstow I'd say, you picked him, give him three matches to show if he's ready to step up to test cricket yet or not.

On Finn I'd be more severe, for several reasons.

Firstly he's already had more chances that Bairstow.

Second, part of Finn's problem seems to be an attitude that team plans don't apply to him - ALL the short-of-a-length stuff he bowled at Ager can't have been failures of control. I believe it was deliberate on Finn's part.

Third, Finn is in the team partly through the earlier misfortune of others: Tremlett, Onions and Bresnan, none of whom have let England down.

The issue is whether they are the Cricketers they were pre-injury.

No doubt Finn will come back - I remember a certain Jimmy Anderson being in and out of the team in his younger days as he struggled to get control - both mental & physical - of his game. Look at him now.

Especially for a youngish pace bowler with the heavy physical demands of the modern game, there's nothing wrong at all in having a couple of months back in county cricket to do a bit of thinking and learning away from the harsh spotlight of the test arena.

So for me if one of the others is in good form at the moment, then replace Finn.

Many people were calling for Bell's head before the first test. Now all of them were gone quite. After all England won the game. Give Bairstow couple more chances along with Finn. The Tent Bridge pitch looked like it was imported from middle east. Finn will do better in Lords.

The last pitch really didn't suit Finn, but he didn't help matters in the way he bowled. If Tremlett is fit, I'd take the risk on his form and quality since his injury problems. He was very impressive in his run in the team.

As for the Batsmen, leave them as they are. If they knuckle down they'll be fine, a lot of the dismissals were cases of getting themselves out.

Well, an unchanged squad announced, so looks like they are not willing to gamble Tremlett at this stage of his come-back.

TBH I'd love to have Tremlett back if he could recover the form he showed when he was last in the test team, but I guess it would be a very big gamble to pick him so soon after his return, so I'm not going to be critical of the selectors on that front.

So effectively it's between Bresnan, Onions and Finn for the final place in the starting 11.

I suspect they will give Finn a chance to redeem himself on his home pitch.

However, if he doesn't - on the pitch likely to be most helpful to out & out pace of the summer - then surely he will be out of the picture for a while.

I believe Finn is capable of producing the goods - but rather like Broad of a year or two ago be needs to drop the macho short stuff and just stick to the plan. It was obvious Cook was frustrated with him at Trent Bridge. He will need to win his captain's trust back too.

If they are worried about bolstering the batting Bresnan may get the nod.

Onions would be a great pick as the stock bowler to make sure Anderson and Broad did not have to bowl extended spells, and would probably nip one or two out too. However, having failed to get into the Trent Bridge 11 ahead of Finn, I can't see that being reversed at Lords.

Onions' test hopes may rest on Finn producing another poor performance and the batting being more solid as a unit.
