Is Rooney holding United back like Ruud?

RVN was an excellent finisher but by the end of his time, we became one dimensional and were solely relient on him for goals. Our team was based around him and teams learned to nulify that.

Rooney is causing us the same problem, abit in a different way. He has become our engine but also he and RVP has to play to keep Rooney happy. We have seen a lot of people mention to sell players, and some rightly so, but I do think we need a bigger change. A change from one player demanding his place, even when out of form or unfit and throwing a hissy fit everytime things down go his way. When Ruud did this, we could get rid as we had talent coming through that would step up. We took a step back before we took a few steps forward. Do we need to do the same? Rooney only has a year and a half or so left. He wants a wage rise and we don't know when he will throw another strop. I do think we need to get in someone who will take over from Rooney. I know he is our main man, but our main man doesn't care for United. When that happens, it is better to get rid than not. Take the game for example. He should have been sent off.

We also can't get the best out of the team with him in it as we always have to shoehorn him in and other players have to play out of position for him. And him knowing he is our talisman since Ronaldo has gone has affected him. Right now he is on form because he wants to show 'some one' is wrong. But looking how he has done, his form isn't even that red hot that he needs to demand another increase to his wages.

For all the praise he gets I do think we is holding us back from evolving into a new side.

I was hoping UTD would be dumb enough to let go of the Granny smasher in the summer but they didn't and now they are benefitting from keeping him as he seems to be keeping them afloat.

I hope UTD still do not realise how good and vital he is for them and sell him rather than renew his contract.

Amazingly people like Robb still want him out.

i can see where the OP is coming from but no, Rooney is not holding Utd back.

what has happened though, is we have become too dependant on him, there is a difference.

if our midfield and wide players werent so poor, then Rooney could do what he is meant to do, and everything wouldnt have to go through him.

But is he the sort of player that everything can go through?

When we had Ronaldo, he was made to play second fiddle there, and once Ronaldo left, Rooney was up front as a CF scoring a lot but his assists suffered. Then with Welbeck, he performed too. It seems that Rooney, like Gerrard lacks discipline. This could be due to the midfield being poor or it could be that when we have 2 V 3, he has to drop deep to make up the numbers (so 2 v 3 becomes 3 v 3). Also, many agree that he isn't a proper number 10, he makes less assists than a traditional number 10 but scores more goals.

"It seems that Rooney, like Gerrard lacks discipline."

Both have plenty of discipline

They follow the instructions of the manager, if they didn't then they'd get a bollocking or dropped.

I see the comparisons. Rooney is holding us back in terms of playing shape/style imo, but he is an important cog in our team.

Rooney holding this team back ?

Sorry but thats a ridiculous assertion when you look at some of the players hes carrying this season

Please privide the link that Rooney is demanding a pay rise and show me all these times that he has had a hissy fit because I can only remember 2 in a decade

The club has gone through a massive change and it is getting clearer and clearer that we need some personnel changes

And you want to start with our best player

The only constructive critisism of Rooney I could give at the moment is that he is being too unselfish for the team. Other than that, he's been our best player this season by an absolute mile

URM - with his usual love in

All I know is that whenever rooney has not been happy he does what he did yesterday, petulance at its finest

I also know that when needed other players have stepped up

Here is a thought, and just a thought, but nani is one of the players who gets criticised for basically never stepping up, yet the couple of times he has rooney wasn't on the pitch

I mean against Rm and that time he nearly passed out by the corner flag

even Welbeck was scoring for England without rooney wasn't he?

Ruud was our best player when he was at the club. Rooney is the best one right now. Looking back, we had to take a step back before we went forward, but SAF actually managed it by bringing in the right players before letting Ruud go. IF Rooney is holding us back, we need to do the same, bring in the players before selling.
