Target or Field?

A few years ago l took my lad who at the time was 6yo to a target archery club where initially he thoroughly enjoyed it. However l noticed how strict it was..... don't do this don't do that attitude. I used to be a weapons instructor in the army and we had less rules let me tell you!
We tolerated it as my lad was progressing well and enjoying it at the same time, until his coach left after a bust up within the committee something l've been told often happens in target archery clubs.
Since then we were left to our own devises when we turned up no one offering to help setting up the boss etc. Needless to say we left.
Until through a chance meeting l met a chap who did Field archery and invited us along to have a look and see how it goes.
All l can describe it as brilliant! Friendly, professional without needless rules so much so that l can even take my dog along! Provide food, drink advice at all levels, not only have l joined but even my wife has.
So, my question is this...... has anyone else swapped target for field and if so why etc
