PFA team of the year?

In case you didn't know Ben Foster posted his team of the year and player of the year nominations up on twitter...

Player of the year: Suarez
Young player of the year: Shaw

GK: Marshall
CBs: Ivanovic and Cahill
RB: Coleman
LB: Shaw

Midfielders:
Yaya Toure
Gerrard
Hazard
Lallana

Forwards:
Suarez
Sturridge

In fairness, that's pretty good. Only players I'd question would be Ivanovic, Lallana and maybe Marshall, although he has been very good so I can understand his inclusion.

What do we think?

What would be your team of the year, young player of the year and player of the year, if you had to vote now (as the players do)?

You seriously thin City's full backs are better than Chelsea's. Zabaletta maybe but Clichy NEVER!!!! He wouldn't get in. Mourinho likes defenders who can defend first of all. I remember he tried to buy Ivanovic to play him at full back for Madrid when he moved Ramos into the centre. He rates him. I prefer Azpilicueta myself who I think has been a revalation. I never thought he could defend!!!

Huh? I just think Zabaletta is better than Ivanovic. Never said anything about Clichy/Azpi!?

Just because Delph, Coleman etc have been very good does not necessarily mean they have been better than the rest. We are comparing relative performances over a season which is why Sturridge has to be in ahead of many other players who are probably better than him. The same case could be made for Cahill etc. But if you put Delph into the Chelsea midfield, Chelsea would win fewer games. If you put Yaya there, they'd probably win more. I'm not talking about ability but level of performance.

So again, I ask you, this season, would Coleman improve on a defence that includes the Chelsea back 4? No, obviously, nor would Shaw or most other players mentioned - possibly only Zabaletta.

Would Delph improve a midfield of Fernandinho and Toure. Definetely not. It is about the quality they have shown through the season. Of course Shaw and Delph and Coleman have improved and are playing extremely well compared to their abilities but they are not playing better than the others.

Have you seen them play without Terry? People point to Luis but Terry and Luis seem to play better than Luis and Cahill. Terry is essential for Chelsea. Mourinho knows this too - that's why he won't gamble if he's tired or unfit.

Luiz brings both down at cb tbh.

Don't know how anyone can make a case for zabaleta. Only played 15 league games this season

Team of the Year is nothing to do with whether a player would improve the top sides. Don't understand your logic with that.

For example Sandro is probably a better central midfielder than Delph and Noble ordinarily but they've had a better season. One off seasons happen and maybe that is all this is for the likes of Delph/Coleman but they should be in their based on their individual performances, not how they fit into their teams respective defense.

If you are picking purely based on who fits system, as you're arguing for Ivanovic vs Coleman, then where does it end? Why don't we just make the whole Chelsea team Team of the Year as that system is working well for them?

But you're missing my point. The team I have picked would be the best performers this season and one of the ways to see if Delph is good enough I see if he would fit into a team with the players that I picked. He may have played well but he hasn't played better than Toure, Fernandinho, Gerrard or Henderson, Ramires, Ramsey and even some of the Spurs midfielders. Therefore I don't consider him although his improvement has been astronomical.

I say again, just because they are playing well compared to their relative abilities does not mean they are playing better.

As for those talking about the Arsenal defenders. I understand they have been good for a big part of the season but against the top teams with the top strikers (and against Chelsea who have terrible strikers) they have failed miserably - and not just in one game. I think that shows their relative levels compared to the rest.

But that's a personal opinion, you're making out as if it's some sort of statistically proven fact that cannot be disputed. I would argue that he hasn't been any worse than Fernandinho or Ramires, whilst Ramsey hasn't played enough of the season to warrant a place. As a Spurs fan I can honestly say Delph has been better than all of our central midfielders. But it doesn't mean I'd slot him into the Spurs midfield because I'd hope Dembele or Sandro can produce the evident talent they possess and have been holding back this season.

The point on the Arsenal defenders (Specifically Mertesacker) is that his team have left him woefully exposed against the big teams. You look at the goals they've conceded this season and you'll find little to fault Mertesacker with. They just don't have the luxury of a good enough Matic/Sandro/Fernandinho figure to sit in front.

Cech
Coleman, Cahill, Terry, Azpi
Nasri, Toure, Hazard,
Suarez, Sturridge, Aguero

- Nasri is debatable but their hasn't been any other standout performers. Ramsey, Matic and Fernandinho have also been very good.

- Also don't get the Gerrard hype. I personally think Henderson has been better. He was brilliant when he was the main man whilst Gerrard was out injured.
