Diving

With all the talk this weekend of diving for pens etc i heard a story from an old mate the other day. He went to Harrow school and was a striker in the first 11. His coach was David Ellerey, the once famous PL ref. He drilled it into the players that if you were in the penalty area, go down at the slightest opportunity whether it was a foul or not.

The issue is, with technology these days two decisions can look similar, but with all the variables on the pitch, they aren't in the eyes of the referee. Makes him look one sided. The media's perception seems to be that if they can see it slowed down x1000 then the referee should have seen it.

Pro - excellent point!

One of the basics in refereeing is not to make a call to make up for an earlier call.

A couple of examples:
- the ref gives an apparent soft penalty to one team - instructors emphasis - do not simply give a soft looking penalty to the other team to even it up, unless you truly think it is a penalty.
- the referee gives a throw-in and realizes afterwards he made a mistake. Don't give it to the other team next time just to make up for it.

Accordingly, referees tend to call it as they see it, not in a manner to make it look even. That can mistakenly give the impression that he is only calling it for one team's benefit.

We're in for some fun if Cellino brings in his Italian players then.

I would like to see Stewart and Kebe, and other players from our team taking the ball into the opposition penalty area and, without 'diving' when there is no contact, I would advise them to go down if the player takes them and not the ball.

Sorry if that upsets a few, but I feel we need to look at what a foul is. It's not the forwards fault that a player takes his legs...!

Blatant diving like what Gordon Watson did against Leeds some years back should carry the same sort of penalty that Ramires should face for his blatant elbow over the weekend.

They should do them retrospectively. The technology is there nowadays. That would cure the problem.

There's a difference between diving and going down with contact.

If you have defenders kicking lumps out of you all game and then they go in for the challenge and get you instead and you can win a penalty, go for it.

Diving with absolutely no contact is what I don't agree with.

About 4:55 for those that don't like seeing the rest!.

Things like that should have the FA/FL stepping in!..

Jonny

The idea, as much of the media suggests, of a referee evening up the game is ridiculous.

Each referee at that level is assessed. The match is reviewed via a video after the game by the assessor. It used to be done by an assessor there at the game but it's all done post match via video now at that level. If he 'evens it up' the assessor will not say, "You made a mistake but you evened it up, well done." he will say, "You made 2 mistakes." That is why no referee will even things up.
