Diving/simulation?

Following on from Winston's 'debate', which i can no longer comment on (guess i upset the poor chap), and which isn't really a debate in any way, but more of a slanging match where everyone just repeats themselves until they go blue in the face.

I'm going to use one example here, which is the sturridge 'dive' against Utd at OT this season.

The question I want to ask is, whilst there was clearly no/minimal contact in this situation, should it not still have been a penalty anyway. If a player slides across in front of you and misses the ball, shouldn't that be a foul, even if you can jump over it? I can't be bothered to read up on the rules, but surely that's effectively blocking a player off. Why do you have to take someone out for it to be a foul?

This may be a ridiculous question, but I'm interested.

(let's pray Winston doesn't turn up and keep the 'debate' recycling itself for another month)

Sure but I don't often see players hurdling totally mistimed slide tackles in the box. Certainly not Liverpool players anyway.

Just avoid it and jump and wave your hands around that's what I'd like to see. Rather than feign being shot when you've effectively kept yourself safe. It's impossible to referee because it's no longer a mans game with all the pathetic playacting.

It's the players that blur the lines for the referees in these instances.

But that's exactly what happened with Sturridge. If he didn't dive he was getting clattered. Yellow for Vidic and yellow for Sturridge

But a the same time should he be forced to take a challenge, possibly risking harm, instead of diving and getting a yellow? That doesn't add up for me

If the tackle is reckless and mistimed it should be deemed a foul. The problem arises when a player intentionally takes a nick or tries to take a nick of contact by his own movements and elaborately dives to gain what then looks like a clear "unfair advantage". If he's unfairly impeded then contact "shouldn't" be an issue. I don't blame either party though because I've seen Aguero hurdle challenges only to be forced into not capitalising on what would have been a very good opportunity to score. I just hate the acting element, would like to see penalties given for mistimed tackles that ruin attacks without any contact made, might just be me though.

I think everyone should be big enough to admit that this isn't limited to one team, it goes on across the board and all clubs have been guilty.

Also - I think we all accept that it is a nightmare for referees and the lines are blurred. I've heard many people moan about players going down theatrically and 'making the most' of it - but if they don't then they simply don't get the decisions.

Those rules are interesting actually.

We would all agree that pulling someone's shirt whilst they are trying to run away from you is a foul and sometimes even a yellow card, but it isn't in the 7 prohibited actions.
