Gary Rowett

So it seems that the Brewer's run to the top of the league has the predators starting to circle around our manager.

Not surprised that he has turned down Blackpool. With the possible exception of Leeds United it must be the most unattractive position in football given the events of the last few months.

Are we to be reassured by his commitment to the club 'for the foreseeable future?'

Or do we need to be realistic and recognise that he is ambitious and that if not Blackpool, then who will be next in the queue?

I think many of us on this site were dismayed when he did not follow Peschisolido out of the Pirelli. And we are all more than happy to admit we got it wrong and take our hats off to Ben for getting it so right again.

I hope he stays. I'm looking forward to the season ahead.

But consider this. Birmingham City are again sliding towards the foot of the championship, having only escaped relegation in injury time of the last day of last season. Even before today's news, the bluenoses that I work with have identified their former player as Lee Clark's successor of choice once the inevitable happens. And don't forget that Pooley and Kev Summerfield spent time at St Andrews.

The inevitable consequence of success at League Two, I fear.

Just hope my rumour mongering is as accurate as my predictor league forecasts!!

No real surprise that other clubs will look towards young, successful, ambitious managers.
I can remember on the league show last year, that Birmingham fans were saying that they wanted him as their manager.

We'll have to wait and see........

hope he stays with us but if his chance comes good look to him

You have seemingly "dug up" Brewer Dave , a fervent fan from " yesteryear" who was very active at the time at the time of the "Pesch debate" and was mistakenly very much part of the support of the rookie manager at the time. The debate was very intense, and I was very much in a minority and drew quite a lot of criticism at the time. The debate was incessant, until Pesh actually left..

What relevance is that to now. Well as the Brewers sit top of the division and could be on the verge of the most successful of seasons, I have not seen the Brewers play this season, and saw very little of them the previous season due to ill-health, I am currently up out of bed at about 4 o'clock in the morning, with another difficult night to sleep, and I feel driven to make my first contribution in a very long time.

Naturally, I write to support Gary Rowett, who had done a surprisingly good job, and proved himself to be a very astute guy. He seems to make the sensible decisions, takes the difficult ones and in a compassionate way makes all the right decisions in a dispassionate way. There were many occasions , with some of the most committed former players, that we would have all thought some degree of "softness or practical gratitude would be shown, but GR inevitably seems to make the logical sensible decisions, day in day out, with his feet firmly on the ground. He is also driven by the constant need for continual improvement and never "resting on your laurels".
I think he is probably a unique manager, in that he is not dominated by his own ego. I think he also realises that he has the best chairman in the league, who gives him the freedom to work in his own way, and more job security than probably any other League Manager.

The path is strewn with good managers from "lower clubs" who have been seduced by the pickings of plying their trade in the higher divisions, but nearly all of them come a "cropper" as happened to the Brewers previous iconically successful manager who chose that very same route. I believe that GR has proved to be a better manager than him, and I believe (hope and pray) that GR will not take this route and stay with the Brewers.
The Club and all it supporters need to show their support for the Brewers, the Players and GR and his team, and Chairman Ben by backing "little Burton" to the extreme, since we probably have he chance with the current team of making "little burton" into something so different as to break the mould of modern big-club, big money mentality, at least in some small unforgettable way and over a considerable period.

In the middle of the Pesch debate, I remember an article from that equally iconic contributor "Terracemen" who said that all the Pesch
controversy would die down an everyone would come together again. Over the last GR years that has proved to be the case as the amount of debate has sadly dwindled somewhat ( thankful to Opec., Pez and many others,, and the Predictor for keeping it going) but there are many less items of controversy or issue, because GR is very logical. The long-ball game, the doubts about Jimmy Phillips, and Alex MacDonald all seem to have been won by GR, and although there is a concern about the lack of goals
it was probably a necessary stage in the development of a miserly defence. I remember people calling for a leader and dominant centre half like Ian Sharpes from Shrewsbury, or Steve Elliot from Cheltenham. That happened and the fans logic
seems to match up with GR's view and actions.

This is a very difficult stage. Change is inevitable. Not all change is good, especially if you lose your soul and character in making it, and forget your roots that started it all. I remember an article about the pleasures of travelling away from home , supporting the Brewers and travelling to many interesting places, with the delights of their best fish and chips, pies and pasties, local friendliness and having a good day out- which is much more akin to playing in the lower leagues
So being a "big club" is not be the "be-all and end all of everything" Be thankful and enjoy every stage that your club is at, rather like enjoying your children at the different stages of their lives.

The public of Burton must back the club by coming through the turnstiles. We don't want to become Stretton Rangers rather than a proud and succesful Burton Albion.
Have gone on a bit, bet you are glad I don't sit down and write too often,
But I hope GR stays, and every success to him, his team, and the brewers fans.
C'mon you Brewers!

Absolutely excellent summary Brewer Dave.

I really hope that your health returns and that you rejoin the debate and discussion on the site.

As for the thread itself, I am not ashamed to state that I didn't want Rowett as the Pesch replacement. I recall the post Pesch time vividly.

- The 6 pointer with Northampton that we lost 0-1 in the last minute.

- The 0-4 battering that we took at Wimbledon.

- That 1-7 humiliation at Bristol Rovers.

- The 0-4 thashing at home from Aldershot.

The pivotal night really was that misty March evening when a below-par Gillingham turned up, scored a goal for us and we won 1-0.

Haven't we done so incredibly well since. I can't really add to what Brewer Dave wrote. A perfect summary.
