Stevie more advanced...?

We saw on Saturday an example of Stevie returning to a more advanced forward position to great effect/affect (i don't know which it should be!) his link up play with Balotelli was very impressive and the idea that he couldn't get in and around the box late in a game was dispelled.

Is this worth further consideration, Im not talking about the number 10 role as i think Lallana/Sterling can do that to great effect, however is their the possibility of freeing him up from the base of the diamond and playing him on one side of the V?

If so who takes the base, I worry about Lucas playing there as he does give away a lot of free kicks and seems to dive in. Could Hendo take this up with his developing sense of maturity? Allen has played there before and when he first arrived was positioned there by BR, but does he lack the physical presence we need? Is this the naturally time for Can to be positioned there?

A lot of questions and not many answers here im afraid...

what say you reds??

No offence but what are his Goal/assist stats?

I mean I could have great stats for sitting at my desk and looking at my PC all day, but what about my working statistics?? (which aint bad btw lol)

Alonso isn't there to score and play the last pass before a goal, at least that is a very minor part of his job.

Attacking mids and strikers will always have the best goals and assists rates, or should do if they are doing their jobs properly.

I was one who said alonso wouldn't work for us this season. Boy was i wrong if we could have offloaded lucas and picked up alonso we would all be jizzing our pants right now!

Alonso to us was never on the cards.

basically gerrard would not last a 1/2 hour playing box to box...

I think the basics are play him where ther eis space.

If we can find some means with our players that playing on the bace of the diamond gives him space to play great. If a donkey like downing is put on him then after 10 mins it's obvious switch him to the top of the diamond to find space there. Someones then got to fill in deeper.

alonso would have taken gerrards place

Would have been interesting to see how many people would have got on Xabi's back for not being a "proper DM" while he cantered around the pitch no being able to make tackles.

gerrards not a proper dm... but hes obviously better as a deep play maker than gerrard

Yes it would have been interesting to see how many fans would have got on Xabi's back for providing a lack of cover to the back four.
