'I was glad he'd had a heart attack.' I've always known there is something wrong with this guy. Reading some of the stuff from his book, I am glad he got the boot. No player should go around asking " more" from a manager who has won it all, and done it all.
His latest attack on the class of 92 is the saddest of them all. People think 'Paul Scholes lives in a council house.' No Roy we do not. We are well aware he lives in a massive mansion. What people loved about him, is the fact that he done his job and went home.

Yes thats fair.
Suppose I was being slightly narrow-minded!
Perhaps that the game seems to be veering towards a minimal-contact sport, some of those types we've became accustomed to in our league, will die out, on the pitch at least.

The overrated Zidane, for example, is a polar opposite to these players in terms of how he played. But watch him for France and you won't find many players that would lead or captain their team on the international stage like he did. Like many now, he just did it differently.
Fixed that for you Darren

TGM, yeah I think that's true. I also think that a lot of midfielders in the premier league are having to play more disciplined roles as the game has changed so it means there's less license for midfielders to try and dominate midfields on their own as teams are looking to dominate midfields either collectively, or cede possession and territory to try and hurt teams in others ways.
I very much doubt we'll see players like Robson and Keane dominating midfields for the foreseeable.

Undoubtedly Darren.
Nothing better than a good box-to-box midfielder for me. A player like Robson who could do eveything.
Your right though the game doesn't allow for it much now. I wouldn't say the game is more tactically advanced personally to allow so much space, it's often cyclical.

I thought the Bayern team under Heynckes looked equipped in that type of dominating style, with the midfielders they had.
Obviously there's a new coach.

I was talking more in terms of the premier league. Toure, when he can be bothered, is the only player that is really capable of it, in my opinion.
As you say, things are cyclical, so a lot is open to change. I think currently, especially at the top sides, the managers the teams have probably won't see that type of player running their midfield - and I'm only of the opinion City do because Toure was already there and too good to move on, as Pellegrini has never really had a player like that, he's always preferred more disciplined holding midfielders than Toure types.

Whats this new lad of yours like, Herrera?
I think what you said earlier was about right, that we wont see them types here for the forseeable, which is a shame for me.
Toure is like a very good square peg.

Herrera is a hard one to pin down really. He looks a very good all rounder without being particularly exceptional at any one thing - I think that may explain why he's not had much of a look in for Spain yet as they are a side very much depend on specialists.
He's looked very good for us, though. Composed on the ball, good a good engine in a box to box capacity, gets stuck in and looks disciplined positionally. He's chipping in with goals and assists as well which is good.
Not sure exactly what his long term role in the side will be because he's versatile. He played a lot as an attacking midfielder for Bilbao but didn't look half the player someone like Mata does in that position, for example, but his physical attributes and discipline make him a very good option for a deeper position in midfield.
I'm really pleased with how he's started and has already become one of our most important players.
Need to see how he matches up to the better midfielders in the league when we play them, however.

Rightio.
Sounds pretty much like what you needed then. Someone who can get about the pitch with a bit of a presence.
For some of the arguing done on this thread over Keane/Robson he's got a lot to live up to!
Enjoy your evening anyway all.
