Retrospective Bans for Divers

Ex-Stoke manager Tony Pulis says players should be punished for diving after Swansea boss Garry Monk called Stoke winger Victor Moses a cheat.

"I can understand where Garry is coming from. You don't want to see those incidents, as a manager, the worst thing is to actually get beaten with people cheating."

"The FA, the Premier League, the League Managers Association and the Referees' Association should have retrospective judgements on people who dive. I think a lot of managers would like that, I certainly would."

Stoke boss Mark Hughes described Monk's comments as "unacceptable" after he criticised Moses for going down under "barely minimal contact".
But Pulis, 56, said Hughes had been outspoken in the past too: "He's done exactly the same at times. He's lost his temper and been frustrated with referees' decisions.

"You're almost getting a manager against a manager. I think if you had a panel, the panel would look at it [and] judge it."

"The lad [would] be fined two weeks' wages and banned for three games. If he's found guilty, they wouldn't be doing it again."

He said he had fined Jerome Thomas while managing Crystal Palace after the forward dived against Swansea last season.

"The players think it's part of the game. There's nothing worse and Garry would have felt that. The football authorities should deal with it.

"[It's] the best way of dealing with it and stopping the incident where Mark accuses Garry of being young and naive."

I have to say, I agree with every one of Tony Pulis' comments here. People will say that a dive is too open to interpretation but if players are getting 3 game suspensions retrospectively I think it would soon stop the majority of incidents.

It's worth remembering the FA proposed this too, the pl and football league blocked it though.

Well that's good to know. It's a shame the FA & PL can't work more in sync really.

oh for goodness sake, this is just getting ridiculous now.

lets ban the actual football as well as this is an accomplice to these players cheating.

You people are wanting to take any kind of humanity out of the game. the thing I look forward to after the game is the talking points, to discuss with my mates etc

instead, if we got what y'all are wanting to be done, we've have no controversies, no excitement, no certain feelings towards opposition players etc

I understand it's not nice when it happens to your club, but sod it! get on with it.

My comment is in line with those previously suggesting sin bins, video replays and also (although it's in play now) goal line technology.

I know pretty much 100% of you will disagree with me, but one of the things I love about football is the unpredictability and I will stand by that.

The PL will act against anything perceived to affect their cash cow darlings.
Look at the differences between the UEFA and PL FFP stuff.

If you knew that the old adage that "cheats never prosper" held true in the PL, then who would complain ??

But it doesn't. Quite the contrary (business is booming) .

Reducing the amount of cheating won't have any effect on the "unpredictability" of the game. Most of the things which irritate fans most are relatively recent introductions like the OP's issue of diving. Eradicating it from the game can only add to the product not diminish it.

Melton the FA proposed it but I also think as well as the PL owners Fifa were none too keen.
The problem is that ex pro's managers tend to point the finger at the Ref for not spotting it rather than at the cheating multimillionaire players who do it. Or a bit like Sheffield United supporters getting behind Evans.

Totally agree with you Spurgle. Diving frustrates the fans more than any other single thing in the game. You're not going to eradicate all the cheating that goes on, but let's not pretend that we shouldn't try because diving is actually enhancing the game with "unpredictability". What nonsense. There would be a whole lot less of it if a player knows he could be fined/banned retrospectively. Let's see what happens if players try to actually stay on their feet - now that would be unpredictable.
