To get an England call up? Just got off the phone to my mate and apparently he is not in the England set up and Luke Shaw is? ontop of this apparently he had an interview on talksport saying he didn't know what the credentials were to get in the England squad.
Southampton have the best defensive record, by a considerable distance aswell and Bertand has got nothing but plaudits since he moved to Southampton. Luke shaw has been unfit and although been good the last 2 games for Utd, is still hit and miss.
On a seperate note, I said last year to chelsea fans to keep bertand when some of them wanted to buy Shaw, Bertrand with game time is showing that he is as good(right now better, maybe not in a few years)Shaw. I wish we gave him more game time. Looks a fantastic player.

If you have a youngster with good potential than could play for England for years it is in the national teams interest to get him settled into playing for England rather than an older player who is shown a little bit of good form in an otherwise unpromising career.
In fairness in one game shaw played with us the defensive line up consisted of him, a youngster at CB, a DM at CB and a RW at RB. I fancy the defence to start looking a lot better once we actually have some players back!

yeah thats a good point, but tbh we know shaw is going to be in the squad for a long time, these qualifiers and a friendly against scotland are good oppurtunities for other players. Baines has been one of the more overated players for a few years now due to free kick ability and not much to back it up. It would be a lot better in the long run if our two lbs were shaw and bertrand. The guy has great potential still, he really been given a tough break at our club...winds me up. Should of been the made replacement for ashley cole.
So he has been behind the best lb maybe the country has seen. Then we sign a RB unheard of, who turns out to be unbelievable and the best full back in the league...at LB!
We then send him to Soton and buy a la liga winner and CL finalist for 20 mill or something.

Don't get me wrong I wouldn't deny he's had some of the toughest competition he could have...
I wouldn't blame him for not breaking through it either. Generally you have a player playing first team football and moderately well (because you can't be too choosy these days with England! ) for at least a year or two before you can be considered. The only exception to that is usually 17,18 and 19 year olds (20 if we're desperate) once a player starts getting to their mid twenties they have to seriously impress to make the step up because there isn't the belief they will improve as much as a younger player on top of their impressive form...
Although you make a good point regarding a friendly and an easy qualifier, though thats perhaps another discussion. Do you try and get a regular settled group or do you try out lots of different players?
Considering how irregular international game time is I can understand trying to go for a settled group and only trying out one or two new players at a time.
