They played for both sides.......

Happy New Year and welcome to the first "They played for both sides....." instalment of 2015 and a special Cup edition to boot.

In a role reversal of the 1973 debacle the Mighty Sunderland entertain lowly Leeds United in the third round of this year's FA Cup.

There's been a few to wear the famous all white strip of Leeds United and the red & white stripes of the team that used to reside at Roker Park. In today's episode we profile a man with a few links to Leeds United. His brother was one of the all-time Leeds United greats and his son also had two stints at Elland Road.

In a professional career that spanned twenty years he racked up over 600 first team appearances for four clubs including Leeds United and Sunderland. In that time he won the old style First Division, the European Cup, The European Super Cup, Third Division title, the Football Conference title and the 4th Division title. Not a bad haul but he was also won runner-up medals on 7 occasions in no less than 7 different senior competitions.

His name? Frank Gray. He made over 300 league appearances for Leeds United in two different stints. The first starting out under Don Revie, the second ending under his brother Eddie.

In addition to his domestic career, Frank represented his country, Scotland, 32 times and played at the 1982 World Cup finals in 1982.

For followers of Leeds United........,

1) Against whom did Frank Gray win his first Scotland cap?
2) What's your abiding memory of Frank Gray at ER?
3) His son Andy followed in his footsteps by..........?
4) Which other players have represented both clubs?
5) Gus Poyet or Neil Redfearn?

For followers of the Black Kittycats........,

1) Which former Leeds United managers have links to Sunderland?
2) What memories do you have of Frank Gray?
3) Roker Park or Stadium of Light?

Over to you.

"They played for both sides......" is brought to you in association with www.theballdefinitelycrossedthelineandhadgoallinetechnologyexistedin1973leedswouldhavewonthefacuptwice.com and is the official unofficial plaything to the Matchday Thread.

I wish that Connor Wickham played for Leeds now, 'cos he's absolutely useless in the Premier League and he would probably be better suited to, and do well, in The Championship
