Hoddle: A Touch Of Genius

A very good programme to watch about Hoddle from boy to manager. Obviously the replays of his classic goals are always good to watch again and again but he was also the pass master.

What this highlighted for me was how this nation wasted his talents on the international stage as both a player and a manager.

The irony is that he had run ins with Le Tissier and Gazza when England manager.

It cracked me up about the comments he made on Chelsea's training ground office facilities. This was just 20 years ago

The English national side has never been able to make the most of those talents.

Hoddle, Le Tiss, Gazza, Barnes etc. Even Rooney to a degree. We on't seem to be able to accommodate a player who doesn't fit into a traditional position and doesn't try hard and track back.

Reliance on workhorses has long been our downfall, we ignore the few truly talented players we do have, with them either being shoe horned into midfield, centre forward, or out onto the ever troublesome left wing, a la Steve McManaman.

And has scored a grand total of one World Cup goal. He has scored plenty of goals against minnows in qualifiers.

But to suggest he's ever been as effective for England as he was for United is, imo, completely wrong.

Rooney has scored more competitive goals for England than any other player. All this talk of minnows is a joke.

As for putting McMannaman in the same bracket, wow, you are on fire, did you swallow Frankie Boyle?

Rooney has only just overtaken Jimmy Greaves, despite playing nearly twice as many games. Rooney for England has been average, and only keeps getting picked because there is no other alternatives. I doubt he would have got a look in if he had competition like Greaves, Hunt and Hurst to contend with.
