Great article about the FIFA scandal

It seems I am not the only one who thinks that the English criticism and moral crusade for everything that's good in football has been sorely based on self interest rather than principal. I actually love the fact that the article in on the paper that so many people here have been quoting from.

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/jun/05/fbi-investigate-1966-world-cup-greg-dyke?CMP=fb_gu

"The Fifa scandal erupted a mere 10 days ago, and it took barely two of those for England to make it all about itself. Ooh, you’ve no idea how they treated us during the bid process. Ooh, the main thing about this is that we should be given one of the disputed World Cups. The scale of the FBI takedown of Fifa is vast. England is like a diner in one of the ground-floor restaurants of the Towering Inferno building, wondering how what’s going on upstairs is going to affect its
drinks order. Odd how they underplay the fact that England’s bid team gave the wives of the executive committee – their wives! – Mulberry handbags. This isn’t being “above" bribery. It’s being unable to get out of the group stages of bribery."

They may not actually go through with it but only a naive person would really think that what Russia have been doing in Crimea was legal and that they intend to stop there.

A very dangerous game is being played by Putin and despite the Minsk agreement, Russian troops are operating in Eastern Ukraine and who know what next. Just the other day the Ukrainian leader said this...

If that happens then other Balkan countries would be right to worry.

You missed the point, Robb. Your statement implies that either Ukraine or Russia are Balkan countries...

I apologise for using the word 'other'. I just meant the Balkan region. Which as we all know is just south/south west of where the current troubles are taking place.

Analysts fear the trouble could spread there.

Yes, a mistake which really doesn't alter any of the point of the debate. But feel free to cling onto any small victory if it makes you feel important.

So you knew all along Ukraine isn't part of the Balkans? Strange then that you also used 'other' in your first reply.

Also, there's no mention in the BBC link of fears that the conflict might spread to the Balkans, so I really don't see how it's relevant, and in addition it seems very unlikely.

The basic difference is that countries like Bulgaria, Romania, Slovenia, etc. are full NATO members. The main reason Russia acted in Ukraine was because the country was trying to become a full member of NATO. Intervening before that happened is very, very different to intervening in a NATO country.

Russian intervention in a NATO country would be suicidal, a death wish on Putin's part.
