I'm struggling to remember any recent examples of top clubs being used as much as we are by players to get bumper contracts.
The 4 most recent are:
Ramos
Gundogan
Ronaldo
Fabregas
Why do we fall for it?
Is there a risk of reputational damage from this?
This may explain why SAF had a philosophy (yes that word) of the player wanting to want to play for United.
Getting used to get bigger contract

Suarez did sign a new contract. That's why I used him as an example

Ever considered players want to leave but then change their mind as well?

Think I'll avoid you in future

Suit yourself. I couldn't care less.
All I have done is address all your points. You don't have to agree with them. But you don't seem able to argue them either.
Maybe I am not the real issue here.

If United wants to shop at the top table then sometimes we have to accept that players may 'use' our interest to secure a new deal or force an issue.
If that player joins us then great. If not then he was clearly not the one for us and we should look elsewhere.
Just because we run the risk of looking a little silly I think that is better than settling for lesser players to being with. If that happens then you open up a whole new level of debate.
Ramos was unlikely but if there was a chance of getting him, and we didn't try, the club would have been criticised as well.
United's high profile will always lead to debate and long may that continue.
Regarding De Gea. If United want him to stay this season he stays IMO. I am sure that interest is there but what is to stop us thinking that he is using Madrid's interest to get a better deal for himself? Keane did it at United as well as Rio and it's a fact of football life now that to a lot of the players it is a job and that we won't get the likes of Giggs, Scholes and Neville come along often again.

VC you enjoy the Open?
Only saw the Thursday as I was in Portugal with the Mrs and little Irish but I believe it was one of the better opens in recent years?
Great performance by the Irish amateur Paul Dunne as well.

Indeed and most certainly by the OP.

Irish.
Most certainly.
One of the closest majors for a long time. I would say that with 9 holes to go any of ten players could have won it.

Loads of players get linked with other clubs and then stay at their club, is the OP actually suggesting we are the only club this happens too?!

Didn't feel Ramos was likely to happen at all but I think there was more to the saga than him simply using us to secure a better deal at Madrid.
I believe there was genuine desire from him to join us but Madrid's flat out refusal to let him go, made things impossible for us and Ramos.

Disgusted I missed it VC, was passing a barin Portugal on the Sunday pushing the little animal in his buggy and saw it was on.
Ran in to check how it was going and saw Dunne in a share of the lead, thought my God an Irish amateur might win this.
Didnt know the Saturday had been rained off and it was only day 3.
