Uefa Coefficients Thread - RIP

Thread dead Uefa killed it with their capitulation.

“Europe's top four domestic leagues are to be guaranteed four places each in the group stages of the Champions League from the 2018-19 season."

We were just getting warmed up too.

West ham bombing out of the Europa once more. Italy with only 2 teams in the CL. Spurs and Leicester with a great chance to really feck it up for England. There was so much promise ahead of us this season, so many opportunities for data and numbers related fun

Russia passed Portugal this week too. That one had been the great companion piece to the England/Italy storyline. But who cares? Not Uefa. hell we don;t even know what will happen to any of the leagues below the top 4. But hey, who cares about them? Not Uefa. Not the TV companies.

Now, thanks to the money men and big clubs who are scared on missing out of the big Scrooge McDuck style vault of gold, all the fun and excitement has gone

Booooooooooo

Is the Chinese league even the best league in Asia?

I don't see it ever reaching the standards of the real top leagues in Europe, to be honest. And even if it does, I think it'll be down to having really increased the strength of the homegrown talent pool and attracting the best in Asia rather than getting all the wprld stars from Europe and South America.

I don't care how much money they have, they'll not match the prestige of the big European leagues.

I really don;t see why you could say that Asia will never reach the levels of the european leagues.

The game has become so money oriented that anything can happen.

If the wages and players are in Asia, the viewing figures, the commercial deals over there, then the competitions will receive so much more global appeal.

Theres a market of 4 or 5 billion people in Asia. if they start investing their money in their own back yard, whos to say there won;t be a power shift?

As for prestige.....i think its a little overplayed. There used to be great prestige attached to the FA cup. Look where that sits now. even lower league teams rest their players for the FA cup as they chase the $$$ associated with league promotions and european competition.

priorities shift and change.

Never say never but I'd be massively surprised if the Asian leagues took over the European ones even in a 20-30 year timescale, even if they develop some local talent pool for a while the best will leave and go to Europe.

-------------

Why would the best leave? If the league continues to develop, crowds grow, tv rating and sponsorships soar, wages outstrip the rest of the world....why leave?

But it won't draw in the European and South American market. So kids from these countries will still grow up watching and dreaming of playing for the big European clubs. There's more to football than just money. Prestige is still very important. It's why Barcelona and Real Madrid are so attractive to players.

Same reason why there hasn't been a flood of foreigners leaving the premier league (or other European leagues) for China, money is only so much of the equation.

Whos to say the european or South American markets won't be drawn into watching it? China has ficussed hugely on bringing in brazilian players to get a kick start in that market.

And to take your example of madrid and barca, why do fans of other teams tune in to watch them? Isn't them having some of the best players in the world one of the biggest reasons? If messi and Ronaldo came face to face in a Shanghai derby there would be massive TV numbers including from europe and South America.

Granted the prestige may well be important to some, but that can shift.

Yeah but those two won't play in China so it's moot. And they're trying to break into that by signing average Brazilian players. Time difference is also a massive issue. I don't think the times are compatible. European and South American fans will always be interested in the European leagues, and so will the biggest and best players.

foreign player quotas in the super league will have an impact on that. if there was no foreign player quota you could imagine a lot more may leave.

I ma not saying for definite that China will take over the football world, I just find it a little naive that folks can be so dismissive.

The TV deal $$$ grew by over 2000% since they started importing name players from overseas. They have a higher average attendence than Serie A.

They can;t simply be dismissed

I really don't think its as set in stone or definite as that. There's huge potential for the Super league to push Asian football to the fore front of the world. I'm not saying it's a death knell for larger euro leagues, but they have every chance to compete.

Anyway, shame we didn't start this chat earlier as theres meat on the bones here, but....works done....gotta head out for drinks. later

It is going to take tremendous growth just to become like the Portuguese or French leagues...

At that point they would still be like the 5/6/7th best European league and still surrounded (probably) by poor (comparatively to Europe) Asian leagues.

It isn't just the Chinese league vs the PL or La liga. It is also the Asian CL (whatever it is called) vs the CL. The former they could catch up with if we look way into the future.

But the latter would probably take longer than my remaining life to happen if at all without some major events playing a part IMO.

I really don't think it is, though. There's also the cultural differences and language barrier to consider. This plus all the other points raised lead me to believe they'll struggle to reach the level of the big European leagues. But if they do, it would be for the reasons I raised earlier rather than the ones you've proprosed.

Ok mate, have a good one.
