The greatest of all time?

Admins, please can we get this as far and wide as possible - on other sports etc.?

So, I saw a debate asking 'Who is the Greatest sportsperson of all time?' What is it that makes a sportsperson the greatest, is it being at the highest level for a number of years? Having a great rival and beating them? Having an off-field personality? Purely the number of titles/medals?

I want to hear your nominations, with a line or two explaining why you think they are the greatest of all time. Depending on the amount of nominations, it may take more than one person to get your person onto the shortlist so please second any others which people say that you agree with..

It doesn't matter what sport the person comes from, or what era. It could be someone who has made a massive impact in a team, it could be someone who had one truly great moment.

Once we have our shortlist, we will vote using the star ratings to represent sportspeople, before a final round.

Please get your nominations in.

Thank you for all of your suggestions.

I have created a shortlist of 20, there will be four rounds, five in each round with the winners making the final along with one wildcard choice.

OP, sorry I'm late on this, but I just want to throw a name into the ring. If you can find the time, try to read up and/or watch the vid to decide if he merits inclusion as one of your wildcards:

Dick Hoyt

Might seem soppy, but to me what this guy has done is greater than anything the greatest have ever done.

If you just want regular sports personalities, I'll be voting Maradona (if he's made the cut) and/or Ali.

Cheers.

That is simply amazing ioag. As a long distance runner as from recently I can especially appreciate that. Their personal best times are incredible too!

I had a list of about 40-50 written down before i started this. I have heard of this and it is an amazing story, admittedly it did not come to mind when i was making my own list.

Using the previous comments i whittled it down, and added a few i had overlooked to make the 20. This is the first time its been considered. I am unsure whether i should stick to those who I've already decided made it or not.

But thank you for your comment, reminding me of this has genuinely cheered me up on this Friday afternoon.

Cheers Trebs. No worries, I realise you have a tough job on your hands.

Wump, did you check out the "Racing History" section? Pretty insane, more so for someone who only started running at 36.

Round four is up

Please take a look, even if it's just to vote. Any thoughts on why you've voted in such a manner would be appreciated.
