of scoring in12 consecutive games in England's top division.
The notion that football didn't exist before 1992 is totally ludicrous. In 1992 the First Division merely changed it's name to the EPL., does that mean that every record is expunged because the league changed it's name ? If you think YES that Van Nistelrooy's "record" of 10 doesn't count either as it was the Barclaycard Premier Laegue back then (not BARCLAYS as is now) - another name change and records expunged again ? ssems not.
Also worth pointing out that Stan Mortensen scored in 15 consecutive games for Blackpool in season 1950-51, but he got injured twice during the sequence, and missed matches, so consecutive for HIM but not for the club.
I have to say, I don't recall back in 1993 anyone saying that Teddy Sheringham was now the record scorer in English football.
Records are records, you can't just cherrypick when you want to start or stop.

Watching motd last week they said that Aguero is now the highest scoring south American in the premier league followed by Tevez and Suarez. I wanted to find out whether this is an all time record or prem only record but all the info I can find is from 1992 onwards. Anyone know or got a link? If it's an all time record, why refer to it as a prem record?

There were not many South Americans pre PL.
Obviously Ricky Villa and Ossie Ardiles are something of trailblazers, neither of whom were prolific.
Mirandinha springs to mind, but he didn't score many.

I think you are proving my point here re pre-1992 football.
Prior to 70's there were few foreigners playing in UK, anyone outscoring Aguero would be familiar to us oldies.

Just remember one - George Robledo, a Chilean played for Newcastle in the early 50's, scored plenty of goals per game but don't think he stayed in England long enough.
Just checked Wikipedia, Aguero 85 in England, Robledo 82 for Newcastle and also 45 for Barnsley (not top division).
So again it depends on how to want to interpret this, highest goals scored in England -Robledo. Prem league (or top division) - Aguero

I suspected something like this might be the case. So Aguero's is an all time record. Still they prefer to go with calling it a premier league record. That's just ridiculous if true.

It really clearly doesn't.

This is the first decent question I've seen in this debate over two threads. And I can't reasonably answer it in a positive way other than the prem want to 'own' that record. True, it's a silly record and would have meant nothing to anyone previously - but that's the case for a lot of 'records'. A fair few are nonsense and only, repeat only, exist to be included in promotional material and make it all seem more 'exciting'.

I agree, and I think it's ridiculous.

^ You often hear these Premier League 'records' referred to during match commentaries. Many of them are fairly spurious like the 'highest scoring South American'.
I also remember a reference to 'the highest scoring World Cup winner.'
This duality of all-time, top flight records and Premier League 'records' will continue to be a divisive issue.
Give me an all-time, top flight record any day.
Premier League records exist, fair enough, but they often only tell half - or less - of the [his]story.
Whatever floats your boat - or bounces your basketball -
I guess.
