The Championship has proved a level too high for Cotterill more than once.
City have had a fair bit of investment, and they have simply not been good enough. You cannot live on past glories in this game, Cotterill was taking them down.

In response to your comment; yes, and we love him for that, but his recent win record was unacceptable and he would NOT budge from the 3-5-2 formation. He also never deployed his subs until 80+ minutes which was pointless.
Forest fans called him a one-trick-pony and they were right - that one trick dazzled everyone in league 1 but the championship sides saw through it.
