Possession

http://www.skysports.com/football/news/11662/10129927/manchester-united-and-leicester-city-prove-possession-isnt-everything

Very interesting read and stats in there. Something I've been thinking about recently in our games with Leicester.

An alarming one is how low down the table of 'average % of passes in the oppositions half' we are.

Thoughts?

Its not interesting at all.

The article is basically saying "counter attacking teams fair better with less possession that their opponent".

And "Possession teams are more likely to have the ball"

Then its says "How good the actual team is/how well they are playing determines the results".

But everyone knows that a great possession team will beat a great counter attacking team 9/10.

Trojan,

Pretty sure Leicester haven't lost 9 out of 10 games this season. What you say just isn't true. We've lost more games at home than away this season. We play a more counter-attacking game away from home and seemingly have better results. It completely depends on the players you have. With pace, counter attacking is just as potent a threat as possession football.

Also on the main article point, stats are meaningless in this regard. Possession in your half is worthless in terms of reading whether a team is on top or not, much like distance run is warped. If a player makes toothless runs or even across to the other side of the pitch to take a corner, that will affect his running stats.

This can't be true. The stat king and best rememberer of everything ever Hafi said that you spend all your time camped in the opposition box.

It tells me that Guardiola is an exceptional manager. Plays football the way I like it and wins multiple trophies whilst doing so.

There are many ways to win, but I'm not a fan of teams parking the bus and always using the counter attack. Just my thoughts as a football fan in general.

You see I said great possession vs great counter teams. You are neither.

Possession is never worthless, but not having the ball is always pointless.

unless you are a counter attacking team when not having the ball is a vital part of your game which draws the opponents forward creating space behind to exploit

But you need possession to counter...

% passes in opposition half is misleading

Teams that build from the back will have a greater % in their own half, those that hoof the ball long will see better percentages. Doesn't have much of an influence on the result.

Are you responding to a Spurs fan about Spurs. Anyway because taems play an 8-1-1 formation against us we can pass it for most of the game or keep the ball. Teams like Arsenal and Man City do a lot of pointless quick passes while we do it slower. Thats why we have the most possession.

Passes in opposition half:
1st Man City 7569
2nd Arsenal 7034
3rd Man Utd 6934
4th Chelsea 6625
5th Liverpool 6292

You get the picture. Anyway interestingly we had the most passes this season. I always find it funny the backpasses they count or passes in our own half when we also high in passes in opposition half. We dictate about 80% of the game. We had the most territorial possession last season as in teams not attacking us hence why we conceded the fewest shots last season and this season it is going similar except we are struggling to score because we have numpties missing sitters and LVG getting blamed the players are getting no chances even if they miss 3 or 4 sitters in same game.

Action Zones own half Man Utd have least amount of percentage of touches for players in own half so we are 1st for least % of touches in own half. In middle zone we have 4th from top touches. In opposition half Man Utd have the most percentage of touches in opposition half. Not really suprising as we usually play a 2-62 formation vs an 8-1-1 formation opposition use against us. If anyone watched the Sheffield United match then that is pretty much how most teams play against us, just sit back and let us attack for most of the game and we get called the boring negative defensive team.
