Pep to Leeds

With the news today that Guardiola is going to Man City, I'd like to know your thoughts on this.

Currently there are a few so called 'top' managers in circulation that just seem to jump from one high profile job to another. On the way they collect their piles of cash and whether they do well or not, they still move on to other jobs with piles of cash.

All of these teams have money, good players and good fan bases. I'm not sure how these guys should be judged, because common sense would tell you that these teams would be relatively successful irrelevant of who was in charge.

I would really like to see one of these guys drop down a division or two and take hold of a more unfashionable team with less money and run of the mill players and see what they can do. They don't need the money.....how about taking hold of Leeds Utd and showing us what you can do? I know it's not going to happen but I think it would show us their real abilities as a coach and manager.

Champers do you think that someone like Steve Bruce do a good job with a big club with money to spend ?

Its a case of what if though. What would happen if Guardiola took over Port Vale

Like Revie said, he'd get them fit and organised but not much else.

No, not necessarily. Van Gaal has spent a kings ransom and he serves up the kind of football that would put a glass eye to sleep.

Money really isn't everything and it certainly does not guarantee success. Guardiola is where he is because of the style of football his teams play. Sure, he's been more fortunate than most in terms of the club's he's been at but somebody saw something in him whilst he was managing the Barca B team. A club like Barcelona could have chosen pretty much anyone after the exit of Rijkaard but they saw what Guardiola was trying to do. It also wasn't a formality that he'd get success at Barca either. He sacrificed very good players (Yaya for one) because he had a definite idea of what style he wanted to play and the players who could achieve that vision. Promoting the likes of Busquets, who may not have got a look in under a different boss, and turning him into one of the most consistent passing players in the world. He also elevated players like Xavi and Iniesta onto a whole new level.

Yes he's been fortunate in some respects (not many club managers get a Messi for instance!) but he's not a chequebook manager per se. His reputation has been earned not given to him.

Good summary.

An idealistic thought expressed by the author, but not practical.

Champers I hear you but your analogy is a little extreme to say the least - so going from Bayern to Leeds would be like going from the board of directors to cleaning bogs?........er hold on....

Haha it was completely hypothetical hence why I said it would never happen - just would be interesting to know if one of these guys could take a lower league club up and onto glory.

I don't see why not. We've only had David Wagner since December yet the style of football he studied during his apprenticeship at Dortmund is already rubbing off on the way we play. His impact has been instantaneous. The biggest problem we have now is trying to find the right players for his system under the budget we have.

Foreign coaches look at the game much differently to their English counterparts, with a greater emphasis on the technical side of football. If someone like Wagner can get us 10 times fitter and more aestheticically pleasing in just 2 months on a shoestring budget, then I'd imagine that the likes of Pep, Jose, etc would fayre the same to be honest.

Obviously it's just an opinion
