Double Jeopardy

Was anyone else aware that the rule described as 'double jeopardy', where a player is sent off for a professional foul for denying a goal scoring opportunity, is being changed next season? No longer will a player who makes a genuine attempt for the ball be sent off when a penalty is awarded - it'll be a yellow card.

However, violent conduct, deliberate handballs etc will still be a red card even when a penalty is awarded.

I had absolutely no idea this was happening until I read a Scotsman article about the Bain sending off on Sunday. They've kept it awfully quiet.

I welcome the change, although I'm concerned that if a keeper brings down a striker outside the box then what real punishment will the keeper face? A yellow and a freekick? It doesn't seem fair.

using this theory, does that mean if ref had given a penalty in last seasons semi final when josh meekings handled the ball, that he shouldn't have been sent off?

I mean, you were getting the penalty, so no need for double punishment.

Deliberate handball would still be a red card.

It's only when you make a genuine attempt to win the ball that you avoid the red card, like a keeper diving at someone's feet or a defender sliding in trying to make a tackle.

My interpretation is that if you were to swipe someone's leg from behind or pull back a shirt it's still a red card.

the less left to interpretation from our refs the better tbh

I didn't think Bain should have been sent off on Sunday either btw

rnr, I still think the red was harsh.

Although the article in the Scotsman explains why it was still a red.

deliberate or not, its still double punishment is it not?

Think we need to get away from the phrase 'double punishment' and think more of the correct and appropriate punishment.

Technically it's a triple punishment. Penalty, red card, suspension.

I think it's appropriate if you're cheating - stopping the ball deliberately with your hand. Is it appropriate though if you've genuinely tried to make a tackle and someone has got there a split second ahead of you? Not for me.

I agree, there is no such thing as double punishment

everyone knows if you commit a foul in the box, then its going to be a penalty and possibly a booking or red card

I wouldn't be against taking away the suspension aspect, esp for non violent offences

Don't like this change to be honest. Far too vague stating "a genuine attempt to win the ball" and it leaves yet another decision up to the referee's discretion, meaning less consistency amongst officials.
If someone is running clean through on goal and you make a tackle that brings them down, then you should walk. It's not the rules that are "spoiling the game", it's the player who made the mistake and the defence that let the guy through 1-on-1 that caused the problem. It's not unfair to be punished for a mistake.

Like Dennis' idea about removing the suspension though. A non-violent mistimed tackle shouldn't have repercussions for the next game. Darren Fletcher missing the Champions League Final is a good example of where that was unfair.

it was unfair on fletcher because replays showed he won the ball first
