With the imminent arrival of the special

one,

Genuinely interested to discuss what you feel this will mean for United.

I understand over the years the view of Mourinho has been " never at my club"

Well it looks like he is on his way

In fact that's a bad guess - we had Giggs involved didn't we?

Quiz question: in terms of the average age of the players, which was the youngest title-winning team in PL history? And bonus point if you can name the manager.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Errrm, United 2013?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
close.

chelsea 04-05 apparently. but you can't now have the bonus point for the name of the manager.

Well, well, well what do you know? JM the Youth Killer wins it

and RVP, scholes, vidic, and evra.

if i wanted to be really playful i would ask what i asked someone who claimed that jose leaves all his clubs "in a mess", which is whether jose's former clubs have, in general, been more or less successful than SAF's former clubs...

Whilst staying in the CL.

------------------------------------------------

I made the argument that being in a more stable, long-termist environment could bring out a different kind of Mourinho. But shinjithemancinoz makes an important qualification. Two consecutive seasons out of the CL has major implications for our bottom line because of the Adidas deal. So I'd assume Woodward is telling Mourinho that bringing through youth, building for the middle-term future and playing attractive football are all 'desirables' but that qualification for the CL is essential. Perhaps we'll need one year of old Mourinho before we get to see the new Mourinho.

I think this could be Jose's final 'big job', because he's basically been everywhere (maybe except Germany). He may have a more long-term view, and perhaps for once have an eye on the youngsters at his disposal. It will be a fine line between being successful and bringing along the youth talent that we have, and maybe naively, I just feel we may see a slightly different Jose to the one of the past, and hope he has learnt a few things from his final few months at Chelsea.

Perhaps it is destiny that Jose was to be manager at Utd, I do have reservations, but I just get the feeling that he will ultimately be successful.

Ouch.

Not sure on St Mirren, but Aberdeen and United certainly haven't..

So Jose will play swashbuckling football?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
In his first spell at Chelsea we played some awesome stuff.
Nobody scored more goals than Porto in the two seasons he was there. In his three years at Real they scored more than a hundred goals each season. When At Inter they were top scorers in Serie A both seasons!
----------------------------------------------------------------------

See the issue I have with this is number of goals scored does not always correlate to how exciting the football is.

His Real team scored bag loads of goals but they were not great to watch, they played a pretty mundane brand of counter attacking football. Great against some of the wee sides but they really struggled to break down well drilled teams and truth be told his record against Barca was awful. His tactical approach to those games was nothing short of a disgrace, so easily countered by Pep that its actually amazing that his managed to beat them at all during his tenure.

He also played religiously with 2 DM, that is pretty unheard of at Real. That’s the sort of thing that gets people the sack at that club. Not even Rafa done that.

For the life of me I cant see anyway that Jose will work out at Utd, like at Real all his big motivational and tactical thinking is incompatible with one of world football truly big clubs. Its not just enough to win, you have to win in a certain way.

Makelele & Helguera

I thought the Galacticos played with 2 DM. Although everyone else barring the CBs were majorly attacking

Maybe it was Guti not Helguera?

Or maybe that was just me on PES?

I'm with RR and I think what is probably the majority of United fans in that I'm excited about how good it could be and worried about how bad it could be.

However, a Jose who has had some time off to rest and take stock of what went wrong at chelsea is a much better prospect than the thought of him coming in straight after what probably his toughest time as a manager.

If we get the Mourinho of Inter I don't think too many could complain. He was loved by the players, the club and the fans and only left because the biggest job in club football became available.

Excited and nervous in equal measure.
