Spend Per Trophy - Who Has Wasted the Most?

Morning Lads

I produced a similar article a while back but given the levels of expenditure from the current transfer window and the managerial fallout from the Pogba transfer, I thought i'd give an update to the spend per trophy list.

We often hear of certain clubs being criticised for wasting money and other clubs receiving high praise for their business - take for example, Tottenham but my data will show why that's not the case at all - in fact, on the contrary, they're one of the worst performing clubs in Europe in terms of spend per trophy.

I will be using the following trophies (league cup, FA cup, Premier League, Europa Cup, Champions League).

There's no better way of determing who has wasted the most money other than the spend per trophy data - Afterall, we're all in it to win silverware so lets see how the table looks as of 12th Augusut 2016:

Everton: 1 trophy = £361,045,500 per trophy

Tottenham: 2 trophies = £343,350,000 per trophy

Manchester City: 5 trophies = £239,546,000 per trophy

Liverpool: 8 trophies = £114,735,625 per trophy

Chelsea: 16 trophies = £74,699, 937 per trophy

Arsenal: 11 trophies = £53, 396, 818 per trophy

Manchester United: 23 trophies = £43,997,826 per trophy

Have a good weekend lads

Regards

Met

Wages or no wages, spend per trophy is a pretty silly metric, lad.

Its the only metric worth considering. How else should we decide if money is wasted?

Only trophies will suffice.

So Southampton wasted more money than Man U last season because they have no trophy. Are you trolling or am I to take tou seriously?

Can you redo for net spend, I'd be genuinely interested.

Southampton played great and outclassed several teams last year but i'm sure they would have preferred an FA cup.

Also, i think we shouldn't look at seasons in isolation.

By looking at the data from the inception of the Prem, we get a clear idea of how much money each team has spent and how its eqauted to silverware.

Unless of course you thnk the likes of EFC and the Saints spend money just to bob up and down the table with little or no success?

These figures mean nothing if you don't include the Thomas Cook Trophy

A couple of issues with this. Firstly 1992 is an arbitrary starting point. For example the majority of the United team that won the 1993 title were put together before 1992, so you are essentially giving them their first trophy at a discount.

Secondly, spend on its own isn't reflective of the true cost. All players cost more today than they did in 1992. Unless you apply transfer inflation then it distorts the figures. Today a 15 million transfer is considered cheap, but in the mid 90s it was a world record fee.
