Coefficient

Well done Celtic on qualifying for the Champions League group stages, and earning yourselves a massive payload.

I know I will sound like a bitter bear....and I am, but that is only becasue I fear the only advantage gained here is the money that goes in your boards skyrocket more than anything.

The coefficient for the country is not guaranteed to be bettered because Celtic are in the Champions League rather than the Europa League

In short, a team gets 4 coefficient points for qualifying for the Champions League group stages, and then gets 2 points for a win and 1 point for a draw.

If a team qualifies for the Europa League groups, they get 2 points for a win and 1 point for a draw, but they will get a minimum of 2 points regardless of how well they perform.

So, if a team gets into the Champions League group stages and only manages to win one game, draw one game, and subsequently get knocked out of Europe (not wholly unrealistic for a pot 4 team in the UCL)....

That would generate a total of just 7 coefficient points via:
4pts for UCL group qualification
2pts for a win
1pt for a draw

On the other hand, say a pot 4 UCL team team qualified for the Europa League groups, where they were higher seeded, where the big teams put half a team out, and inferior oppostion made up the numbers, and they managed to win 3 games, draw 1 game, and lose just the 1 game, qualifying for the knockout stages in the process....

That would also generate 7 coefficient points via:
6pts for 3 wins
1pt for a draw
....and that team would also have the opportunity to earn further points in the knockout stages after xmas.

I truly believe the Europa League is where Scottish teams have a better chance of obtaining more coefficient points, due to the fact that there is far more chance of winning games in that competition, than there is in the Champions League.

So aye, well done......but dont just take your money and run ya bastirts, we need that coefficient up!!

I actually agree with Ivan on this. I heard a few years ago about Celtic doing well is great for Scottish football - in what way? How do Stirling Albion, Raith Rovers or even anyone in the top league benefit from Celtic getting an extra £25m when they are already the richest team in the country.

I say the same about Rangers, when we do well it is good for Rangers it isn't good for Scottish football necessarily.

The best season I can remember "for Scottish football" was the year Celtic made the last 16 of the Champions League, Rangers made UEFA Cup final, Aberdeen made it past the UEFA Group stages to stay in past Xmas and Scotland were a game away from the Euros.

That is the kind of thing that is good for the game here with overall success giving the game more exposure and credibility. One team doing well is good for that team, it has no impact on the game here.

What happen the following year?

I know Celtic got a tour of Japan on the back of that

Celtic qualifying for the Champions League and getting pumped rotten while pocketing £25m benefits no-one other than Celtic really coz they have made a wad

Scottish teams winning games in Europe at group stage level and above, in either the Champions League or Europa League, is what will benefit Scottish football as that is what garners coefficient points

So as per the op, as a bear, Id rather the 'tic hadn't qualified for the champions league, as there is more chance that they will win games and stay in Europe longer if they were in the Europa, and it also means they don't get £25m for doing sod all but turn up

I fail to see how Celtic being portrayed as the also rans in a Champions League group does anything to boost the profile of Scottish Football....it's not even as tho Celtic beat big name teams to make the draw either is it.

On the other hand, Celtic winning games in the Europa and getting to the latter stages would likely garner more coeff points and probably do more to boost the profile of Scottish teams

The teams that are winning the Europa League are last 16 of the Champions League fodder in my opinion, not only that, but the Europa League winners get a Champions League spot, so that could even be a quick fire way to get two Scottish teams into Champions League at some point

Of course, Aberdeen, Hearts and Hibs etc getting into the group stages of the Europa once in a while if they got their finger out would certainly be a help to the cause

And before any fan of those clubs or Ivan comes on and talks about how hard it is, I've got 4 words for ye

Shamrock Rovers and Dundalk
