Transfer Business review

With only a day to go and the majority of transfers completed in conjunction with a slow day at work I have decided now is a good time to review the transfer business by the contender clubs.

ARSENAL

Three signings in that will trouble the first team.

Xhaka - Class act, what Arsenal have required for a number of years a physical holding midfielder with vision and the ability to pick a pass. Can he make the difference in Europe though?

Mustafi - At 35 million the transfer fee is hugely inflated. Good defender although not better than Koscielny (which you would expect for 35m). Nothing more than an expensive replacement for Mertesacker although it does improve the depth at CB. Should have went for Williams or pushed the boat out and got Aymeric Laporte in. Will need time to bed in.

Lucas Perez - Decent addition although not an out and out striker. Why on earth another summer has passed without the addition of a genuine World Class or potential World Class forward being brought confounds me. Still a very decent goal contribution in La Liga last season, will he be in the first 11 if everyone is fit? I doubt it.

Arsenal have done the absolute bare minimum again in the window. The squad has improved slightly over the Summer but not enough to bring about a genuine tilt at the Title. Fast forward this season (4th and CL last 16 ) and get Wenger out next summer and at long last bring in a manager capable of turning also rans into realistic challengers.

CHELSEA

A reserve goalkeeper and two fantastic signings.

Eduardo - The new Hilario

Kante - 32m for Kante is a steal in the current market. The key summer signing for Chelsea and potentially a title winning signing. Dynamic, composed and under-rated with the ball at his feet. Perfect for Conte and the personality he is trying to instil within the club.

Batshuayi - Already looks better than Lukaku, certainly in the value for money stakes. Very positive start for him though it will be interesting to see if he is deployed more regularly alongside Costa or has to depose him as top dog at Chelsea. You would expect another striker in as well to challenge them both.

A calmer window than forecast for Chelsea which looks to have been beneficial this far. The core of the title winning squad remains from 2 seasons ago, Conte's careful quality additions so far bode well. They do need to bring in a couple of defenders and another attacker before the window closes. though the best signing of the summer will ultimately be Conte himself.

LIVERPOOL

Muddled. It is not clear what they are trying to achieve at the moment. Almost break even in net spend, they need to spend well in a number of positions to think about challenging.

Wijnaldum - Not sure where he fits in, behind Coutinho in the pecking order for no10 and not defensively good enough for CM.

Mane - Best signing made by Liverpool. Adds pace and dynamism in attack, can beat a man.

Karius - Broken hand / Handsome.

Manninger - Old / Decrepit

Klavan - New Skrtel

Matip - Decent centre half with plenty of experience in Europe, is he the man to fix the defensive woes at Liverpool? He'll need a new LB in there if he's to stand a chance.

Klopp must improve the defence, must get a LB in and a very good CM is required if they are to challenge.

MANCHESTER UNITED

Very impressive work, top quality targets identified and brought in early (bar Pogba) and along with the will to win of Mourinho the recipe for something special is coming together.

Ibrahimovic - Top Class. Who would back against him shooting United to the Title?

Mhkitarayan - If he can bring his Dortmund form to the Premier League then he will bring lots of enjoyment. Needs to take the shirt from Martial/Mata or Rooney first.

Pogba - Very good player. Clearly not worth what was paid but he will be a difference maker.

Baily - Surprised at just how good he has been so far. He has everything a top defender needs and under the perfect coach to become one.

Impressive business although still lots of deadwood to be cleared out. As with Chelsea they key man is in the dugout. He does though have to find a place for Rashford!

MANCHESTER CITY

Gundogan - Permo Crock. Don't expect him to make an impact.

Sane - Great potential but a long road still to go before he's the finished article. Still has to be an improvement on Navas long term.

Stones - Money can buy you Stones. Way too much money. Anyway the finanicals aside he is a potential great and under the perfect manager to rinse every ounce of potential he has from him.

Nolito - Impressed so far, improves the team and the goal threat from wide.

Bravo - Well done. Passes well but has dandruff.

Good business, now to see how Pep moulds them into diet Barcelona.

TOTTENHAM

A truly boring summer of transfers.

Janssen - OK

Wanyama - Big lad.

Believe Holding should also be added to Arsenal’s signings. Young and inexperienced at PL level but early signs have been good.

Arsenal: B. Xhaka and Mustafi are both good players for their previous employers. Lucas, I think will be another Giroud like player. Only one of them has played so far so I'll put B as a placeholder.

Chelsea: B+ Kante is looking to be a very good signing for them and gives the other players the confidence to roam forward. Batshuayi hit the ground running already, looks to be a good signing. I didn't give them an A because I think they still need defenders and haven't gotten one yet.

Man City - B Not all of them has played yet so I'll reserve judgment. Giving them a B for the time being due to Nolito and Stones playing well right now.

Man Utd - A

Liverpool: B Mane is a great signing for them. Other guys are Klopp's guys so they might outperform their reputation. Seem pretty solid for a team not able to offer players European competition. However, not good enough to win the PL and outside chance of top 4.

Tottenham: C- Janssen is currently hindering Kane and I think he will be a bench guy by season's end. Wanyama is average at best. Depth is a problem for Spurs and I was expecting to get reinforcements to compete on multiple fronts. Edit: Just read about their financial constraints. Still sticking with my original grade.

Tried my best to keep bias out of it.

Freedom. Obviously I'm biased but I'd say Arsenal is a B+ on the basis of the above that you've written and the fact Ramsey's nowhere near the 1st team at the moment. I think Arsenal is improved by his absence right now...

Arsenal - D

Another poor window, spent 100m and barely improved the first team.
