Michael Carrick

Is such an important player for us. His passing is brilliant and, despite popular consensus, always looks up and forwards when he has the ball, to make a killer pass... more often than not he is successful.

For me, he has to play more. Maybe not every game... he's getting on at 35, but in the big matches his calming influence, ball retention and eye for an 'over-the-top' or 'through-the-gap' pass are exactly what is needed.

Against Chelsea on Sunday I'd go with a 3 of:

-----------Carrick
-----Herrera--Pogba

Great to see him get some game time anyway.

What on earth has happened to Schneiderlein?

To be honest what I'd like to see is Fellaini removed from starting duties and Mata or Carrick come into midfield depending on the opposition with Herrera and Pogba the two ever-presents.

Herrera can operate deeper or in a more progressive box-to-box role.

It's nice to at least be discussing have good options in midfield for once. I think young Tim gave a good account of himself last night, too. Gives us another interesting option in there.

With the exception one game where we fielded a more dynamic looking midfield against Chelsea last season (Schneiderlin, Bastian & Herrera), he's been uninspiring. His passing is not good enough to get a midfield ticking and I don't think he reads the game or picks players up well enough to shield the midfield.

Most disappointingly of all he doesn't seem to be as high-energy and aggressive in his play as I thought he would be. Basically he hasn't made the step up from Southampton.

However, he's had a good passing completion

.........................

The trouble is most of them are safe two yard passes, mostly sideways or backwards.

Fellaini doesn't have the football brain Carrick, for example, has to see a quick forwards pass.

Spot on there on Morgan. Very disappointing.

I know, that's why I'm saying to play Carrick

He's gone backwards.

His performances at Southampton were better than anything Fellaini has produced in that position!

Maybe so, but in fairness to Fellaini, he has a niche skillset. It's not one that I personally want to see in a United midfield but no one can deny he brings something different to the table. Schneiderlin has brought nothing to the table so far.

From what I'd seen a Soton I though Schneiderlin could come in a be our new Darren Fletcher. He seemed to have similar attributes without being in the very top bracket of midfielder. He's nowhere close to Fletch in his prime for us. He'll be gone soon I suspect.

Herrera has taken Fellanis role under Jose in the midfield.

Fellaini should not have any kind of midfield role. He isn't a good enough midfield player.

Carrick is fine for yesterdays kind of game. But in a midfield three for the harder prem and cup games Carrick should no longer feature if our other players are fit.

There is a reason why he hasn't and Jose can obviously see what that is.

Not quite sure why you can't to be honest.
