The 66

RIP those that never came home that terrible day in 71

posted on 2/1/17

Had me wondering this thread, then I twigged.
It was that late goal when thousands of fans were streaming out heard the roar and tried to about turn and go back up the steps.

I left Ibrox via Stairway 13 that day, bit of congestion on the stairs so nipped on to the grass and ran down, totally unaware of the horror unfolding. Got home to find my parents climbing the walls (no mobiles or emails in those days, we didn't even have a phone).

Lost a classmate and a couple of friends that horrible day.

RIP the 66 .

The crush had already started before the goal went in.

That story is a bit of an urban myth created to shift blame to the fans.

My Dad was on the stair when it happened, my grandfather and a few other men started lifting him and any other kids they could over onto the grass verge.

Dad still finds it difficult to go to some games.

There was uproar in my area that night.

No mobile phones and most houses didn't have a phone.

No rolling news or TV's in pubs.

Many of the fellas at the game were unaware and found out when they

got back from the pub and were astonished by the reception they got.

Myself and other weans ran round the area letting folk know

when guys had arrived home safely.

I remember the last Gers family to arrive home was a big family the

Wallace's - everyone home safe.

We were grateful in our wee bit but some weren't as lucky.

SPR.

There are no words that suffice mate.

For many older fans the game changed that day forever.

I was 17 and didn't fully get it until I was much older.

It's a day that those of us who were old enough will never forget. It brought all supporters together and the fact that both sides of the divide still post notes of remembrance speaks volumes for the feelings of true supporters. It also begs the question of why that moron Sutton saw fit to call for Rangers to be "finished " today of all days ? The man is an attention seeking idiot.

Sorry missed this...looks like its on the PL board rather than the SPL. Anyway wanted to pass on my belated thought and condolences.

I believe SPR is correct in his assertion BTW. I had a discussion about that a few years back. At one time, I think most people believed the crush was caused by the goal (Colin Stein I think) but it caused some debate among our group...including a few rangers fans who were divided in their opinions as well....so we looked up the FAI report and I'm pretty sure it confirms what SPR says.

Anyway...it's all a bit irrelevant in the circumstances. A terrible tragedy.
