Albion vs Derby

I concur with JH. A very good win for Derby, credit where credit's due. We just weren't at the races yesterday which is understandable given our fixture list over the last couple of weeks.

Lastpost what you saw yesterday was not the best we've played this season by a long shot. What Pulis is good at is knowing when to shut up shop and when to let the players off their leashes. I think it's important to have someone like that at the helm in the Premiership when you don't have the funds to buy big.

The downside is that you have to put up with some drab performances. The upside is our defence is solid and the football is gradually getting better. I think Pulis will eventually develop us into a team that can play flowing football but without the defensive frailties that have plagued us in the past.

I know it's easy to point the finger at style as a supporter of a different club in a different division. When you are in the Premiership you don't have that luxury.

When McLaren was first mooted as Derby manager after Clough was sacked the other manager in the frame was Pulis. I wanted neither but if pushed I would have preferred Pulis. I expect we would have been in the top division by now. It's a tough one. When you see a fabulous team like Bournemouth it tells you what can be achieved with a more expansive style.

I saw no tricky players, no spark and no excitement in West Brom yesterday. Phillips and McLean ran forcefully, Rondon is a very good old-fashioned centre-forward and the three midfielders all do their jobs.

In the old days it didn't matter so much if you got relegated because the difference in income was not that great. Now there is a terror of relegation and survival must be achieved at any cost. This is great for Pulis because he is pretty much guaranteed to do that but for me I would tire of the grind, of squeezing out the points against bottom-half team every season just to keep it all going. Hopefully West Brom will eventually marry up the robustness with a bit of flair.

Either way, good luck in the next round. I always like to see the team that knocks us out do well.

I think it's pretty safe to say that Derby fans would love to be in the Premier League, mixing good football some weeks with inexpicably dire football others, beating the teams around and below them 3-1 on a regular basis while losing to the teams above them, risking defeat in both cups but being all but guaranteed to stay in the Premier League, and by some distance, and sitting 8th with just over half the season gone. Yes?

Or don't tell me. If Derby were in the Premier League they'd be a lot more ambitious than Albion in their intentions. Well, ambition and achievement are two very different sides of a coin, you only have to be here to know that. Derby have got form there, along with a host of middling Championship clubs who couldn't survive in the Premier League. It's just another of football's cruel facts of life.

And as for Rondon being a very good old-fashioned centre forward, yes he is. Scoring hat-tricks of headers is well in his locker.

No doubt. No need to get especially shirty about it. I was just expressing an opinion. The comparison with Bournemouth was to suggest that there is more than one way of being successful. I am a fan of neither club but if Bournemouth are on telly I watch the game and if West Brom are on telly I don't. I know that West Brom are above Bournemouth at the moment for what it's worth. The latter's 3-0 Cup defeat isn't really relevant given the team that they put out, in contrast to West Brom's approach where a very strong team was picked.

These are philosophical matters, about whether a more open and attacking style leaves a team vulnerable to a loss of form, plummeting down the table and risking relegation. Pulis's approach is less susceptible to loss of form because it relies more on organisation and playing percentages than on skill per se.

All fans want their team to play attractive football if possible, but all would choose results over this IF these are the only two options. My own opinion as that it isn't as simple as that but as I say, it's only an opinion. Derby having beaten West Brom it isn't as if I am speaking from sour grapes - I have no axe to grind.
