Player ratings vs. Everton (FA Cup)

All of the following must take into account the fact that I was stuck behind several pillars in the lower tier of Goodison Park.

Schmeichel: 7 - Largely quiet game, although made one excellent second half save. Kicking a bit tentative today.
Simpson: 6 - Has developed a bad habit of not getting the full way out to wingers as they cross. Sometimes caught out of position as well today. Has had better games.
Morgan: 7 - A big presence in closed space. Able to defend pretty deep in general, which played to his strengths.
Huth: 7 - Cleared a lot with his head from within his own box. Standard Huth performance.
Chilwell: 7 - Was punished for the Everton goal, although didn't have a lot of support. Otherwise stood up to a lot of Everton targeting very well, winning and intercepting a lot.
Albrighton: 6 - A relatively quiet performance; struggled on the ball in the first half for lack of an outlet, but always keen to attack quickly.
Drinkwater: 7 - Couldn't impart much will on the game in the first half, improved in the second and played an excellent assist for the winner.
N'Didi: 8 - Very exciting debut. Any noticeable problems he had looked attributable to communication, which should improve over time. But he was strong in the challenge, technically good and was impressive at reading the danger. My choice for our MOTM.
Mendy: 7 - Much better speed and stamina than we'd seen from him so far. I'm still not sure he has a particularly unique skill set but he looked far more up to speed today.
Gray: 7 - Some good, determined work in the lead up to the equaliser, but still a frustrating player at times because I want more from him considering the hype. Drifted in and out again but gave good attacking impetus when in the game.
Ulloa: 5 - Had one chance early on but was then rendered almost useless except for defending corners as we were pushed deeper and deeper. Really needs some pace beside him to get him into dangerous positions.

Subs:
Musa: 8 - A bold but positive choice to replace Ulloa after his injury. He started the same as usual, taking too many touches and getting knocked off the ball, but grew into his role as he took advantage of the space Everton offered and looked full of confidence by the time he'd got his second. First time I've seen him holding possession under pressure from a decent defender. More of this Musa, please.
Fuchs: 6 - Some nice moments and imparted influence, but didn't look like he quite knew his position and angles in left midfield. Surprisingly, more useful for keeping the ball in the Everton half.
Kaputska: n/a - Looked somewhat out of place to me, although he bought one free kick nicely. Too little to judge.

After a pretty turgid first half, the game sprang into life in the second half and ultimately felt like a case of the team that wanted it more winning it. Hopefully we can get a plum draw in the next round, while Everton are left to wonder what might have been. No doubt they'll be disappointed as they are in a perfect situation to have prioritised this competition if they'd got through a couple of rounds.

On another note, did anyone else keep having to do double-takes at Ashley Williams, thinking it was Joleon Lescott playing instead? I guess that's probably not a good comparison to have...

I'd normally disagree RE Albrighton as his drive and determination is really important to both the team's tempo and its defensive capabilities. But playing a 4-3-3 against Chelsea with a fast front 3 against their back 3 has some merit to it and would ask interesting questions of their dangerous wing backs. There would be a lot of chances in the match for sure if we did that.

The best form of defence is attack so keep their wingers busy chasing us instead. If we went out with that line up and had a go but lost I'd accept that.

CofE - personally, I've seen enough Robot Wars battles to know that the best form of defence is to run away screaming like a little girl.

Thought your best form of attack Dunge was to sit up on the fence and do " an arsene" and not see anything!!

I don't remember doing that.

The most positive thing to come out of the weekends game is that we are having the conversation about who will start against Chelsea due to the good performances at the weekend.

If we remember a month ago we were berating every man and his dog over our performances and lack of options / plan B etc.

Whereas since then we have seen an improvement in our performances on the pitch, the players seem to have bucked their ideas up, CR has tried a couple of little tweaks to the formations etc. and that has been good to see, we have won an away game, Ndidi looks like he could be an astute purchase ( I know its only 1 game, but he looks ok), Musa will be helped by scoring 2 at the weekend.

So things certainly seem more positive than a month ago.

As for the Chelsea game I would like to see

Kasper

Simpson
Huth
Morgan
Chilwell

Mendy
Ndidi
DD

Musa
Gray

Vardy

We aren't expecting anything from the game so what the hell, go for it and see if we can surprise them with pace and attacking intent.

PS Am I the only one that actually still loves the FA Cup? I have spent the whole weekend thinking CR has gone up in my estimation for putting out a strong side, when you consider what other sides have done. I grew up with the FA Cup Final being a major sporting event and its like the Holy Grail for me. Glad to see our club is respecting it and I hope we carry on doing so.

I love the FA Cup too, DDDD.

Although when we draw Spurs away in the 4th round this evening I'll probably love it slightly less.

Don't tempt fate Dunge, lets look on the bright side.

Would love Wycombe or Derby home or away.
What we dont want is Brighton or Middlesborough away.
