Wissam Ben Yedder

The 26 year-old forward signed for Sevilla in the summer from Toulouse, where he had a very good scoring record over the last four seasons in around a goal every other game. The transfer fee was reported to be around EUR9M.

He now appears to be having fun in Spain, with eight goals and two assists in nine starts in the league, and two goals in one start and three sub appearances in the CL.

Scored a hattrick, got and assist, and (unsurprisingly) was named man of the match last time out against Real Sociedad.

Highlights here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQCK6OCifNI. Ben Yedder wears the #12 shirt. His goals are at around 1:00, 1:45, and 4:45.

Anyone seen anything of this lad in La Liga this season? Flash in the pan or looking the real deal?

He's still good for Chile, though. Sevilla have a habit of signing, and getting a tune out of, strikers so can't say it's all Sampaoli.

Them, Atleti and Liverpool have probably had the most hits when it comes to replacing their strikers over the years.

Any reason for the interest? I ask because his stats whilst OK, don't really stand out that much.

At 26 years old and a height of 5'7" he might struggle in the prem.

Not really VC.

I wasn't suggesting him as a future signing; just interested in better informed people's views having enjoyed watching the highlights above and having heard the current buzz around him.

He looks pacy enough for me, but you're right: at much under 5'10", you're going to have to be exceptional to score consistently in the modern PL.

I've only seen him in highlight reels, so unsure as to what he contributes with his overall game, but does seem an accomplished poacher. What I have seen has reminded me quite a bit of Gameiro.

Haven't rewatched the highlights you posted, but I think it was in one of the goals vs R Sociedad that he showed fantastic composure, uncharacteristically cool for a player who knows his every appearance is crucial to him convincing the gaffer.

It's almost uncanny how Sevilla keep hitting upon relatively unheralded players to suit each respective manager they've employed down the years.

I've been convinced for years now that Monchi is the biggest (poorly-kept) secret to Sevilla's success in the past decade or so.

Not sure how he'd fare in a different environment, but he deserves a statue outside the Pizjuán as much as any player or manager they've ever had.

Cheers IOAG.

Was hoping you'd pop up

I call it very good scouting.

Porto and Atletico also have amazing scouts.

Who is the best do we think?

I'd say United. Nobody has ever scouted a Bebe before

Scouts are only part of the reason, though. The decision making at the top to have so many hits really impressive.

Not sure why the height thing matters too much. Defoe is 5ft7, too. All depends on the player

It might well not matter. But at 26 and trying to get used to the physicality of the prem at 5'7" it is likely.

There is nothing in his career stats to suggest he is a Messi like midget.

When Monchi was appointed DoF the club was in an absolute mess and had just been relegated.

He completely rebuilt the both the scouting network and academy system, which has also served them well and reaped considerable rewards too over the years.

As a matter of fact, they're doing very well in Segunda this year. The only academy side in the division this season and they're 5th in the table. I haven't been following them closely, but I imagine they must have some pretty interesting up-and-coming talents to be doing so well.

ioag, yeah he seems to have really helped transform the club.

The point about the scouts was that the decision still rests with him with regards transfers and how they'll fit into the club and manager's ethos.

The scouts are only partly responsible for this as they will have had more than just one player recommended. To have the success rate they've had is a testament to his decision making as much as it is as their eye for talent - it's obviously no fluke they continually do well in this regard under him as sporting director.

Would be interesting to see if he did go to Roma and how he'd do in different surroundings.

Roma are more financially stable than Sevilla but still have a model that relies on having to sell off their best players.
