Rip Graham Taylor

Do i not like that.

Not the best manager but harshly treated by the British press.

For all of his faults he never deserved the complete lack of respect from the press which made his life very unpleasant for a long time.

No doubt they will miss that out when eulogising him in the papers tomorrow.

RIP Graham, I know he got a lot of stick while England manager. I remember the headline by The Sun when he was sacked.

Can anyone explain the do I not like that quote?

I met him on many occasions. He was a very warm and open person, and loved to talk about football. He told me that on every trip away with England, without fail, after he had gone to his hotel room, there would be a knock on the door. Invariably it was a prostitute sent by the press. On another occasion he told me his wife answered the door at home - he avoided going to the door himself because of continual journalistic intrusion - and found some kids collecting for Guy Fawkes. She shouted to him to come to the door and have a look. He went to the door, one of the kids pushed a turnip lantern into his hands, and a photographer jumped out and took his picture.

He was a truly decent man, RIP.

The do I not like that quote was first aired in a fly on the wall documentary after England's failure to qualify for the 94 world cup. It was directed towards the injustice of Ronald Koeman escaping a red card for a blatant foul on David platt (I think ) when clean through. Koeman stays on the park somehow and then proceeds to score the winner later in the game to eliminate England.

I also remember him being vilified by the Sun for England's exit from the European Championships in 1992. We were beaten by the swedes & the next days Headline in the Sun was Turnip & a picture of Graham Taylor's head being portrayed as a Turnip.

Freedoms of the press.

Yet no responsibility or ethics.
