Mahrez at the AFCON

Good to see Mahrez get a brace in his first match for Algeria!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvvbNJ2FyJs

In one sense you hope he has to work to get back in the team on his return as it shows our improvement but if he has a good tournament it can only boost his confidence and be good for LCFC.

Couldn't help notice Slimani

A/ showed some decent pace

B/ not shy of showing his exasperation when Mahrez didn't cross straight onto his nose!

Don't you like Slimani? You seem to have a bit of an issue with our top scorer?

Not super impressed so far!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He's our top scorer, without his goals we wouldn't be in the knockout stages and in the relegation zone.

We haven't played to his strengths anywhere near enough, said it before and I'll say it again, Chelsea game was crying out for him in the box. He has proven that if decent balls are put in the right area then there's not many better than him at putting them away.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
All opinions, not much better than Ulloa for me except he knows Mahrez.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You don't think he's any more prolific with his head than Ulloa?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think he's very good when it's put on the end of his nose!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The other day you were saying Chilwell would outjump Slimani even though he's 10cm shorter but the bigger point you didn't seem to understand was the positioning of the centre forward and wingback. The centre forward should be in the box and the wingback gambling around the back. Chilwell was gambling and arriving later than Slimani would have being the centre forward. If Slimani was on the pitch he would have got on the end of that cross, no doubt about it.

Do you actually watch Slimani's movement around the box and see how he loses players? Whenever a decent ball is delivered he's there because he finds himself a few yards of space by peeling off. I'm guessing you miss that and just think he only scores it he doesn't have to move. He's the most prolific header of a ball in Europe I believe, half of his goals are with his head, if you think all those goals come from crosses planted on his nose then I don't know what to say.

Not a question in my mind, he could 20cm shorted and he'd still outjump Slimani, Didn't you notice the way all our long ball kicks were aimed at Chilwell, he won more on Saturday that Slimani has all season!!

Maybe you hadn't realised, it's the forwards job to make himself space, even Sunday League players do that so Super Slim doing that occasionally isn't too much to shout about, time will tell if he'll turn into a half decent Prem player, hardly what I'd call progression though.

TB Slim has scored goals with his head and thats what hes paid for. He's a long way from home with only one person that speaks Arabic and needs time like Vardy did.
I think he's going to be the next Doug

Nev, seek out the Nairn County board and you'll find it.

Regarding Slimani vs. Ulloa, I think it's clear so far that Slimani is better at getting into the right place at the right time than Ulloa. His peeling off defenders and finding space to meet crosses from Mahrez or Albrighton is superior, while Ulloa generally needs the space to be afforded to him. In short, both are decent finishers but Slimani is able to get more chances and this is quite a difference.

In build up play I'd say Ulloa look somewhat superior at the physical target man role. This isn't Slimani's game. He's better facing the goal like Vardy and Musa, which is why he probably works better with Okazaki, who can play with his back to goal. When Slimani returns from the AFCON, I hope he and Vardy seek to do a lot of work in this area in training.

Ulloa reminds me of Howard good all round play but not going to get you many goals. Ulloa has the minerals that last minute penalty against West Ham took some courage. Hes a good servant to the club and a good bloke. It might not work out but put the ball in the box in front of him and i back him to score and historically since the days of Glover,Fern and more recently Guppy thats always been in short supply.

I agree with that Nev, I'd say both Ulloa and Stevie are / were better all round players on what I've seen so far.

Still, a lot of playing time to come so just maybe big slim will get as good Stevie was!

Dunge nailed this. I'll just agree with him.

Slimani > Ulloa not a shadow of doubt. We're not playing to his strengths though.

Ulloa should be kept purely for his ability to hold the ball up in the corner to see a game out though.
