They've been asked to adjudicate on the issue of Joel, bless 'em, and, surprise, surprise, they quote the Regulations but appear to do absolutely nothing about resolving the case. Do ya just luv consistency?
But for me, clearly there is a proper path to follow with such and august body, I mean it's been a tired and trusted means of resolving such delicate and complicated issues:
Bribery. They'll take that path any day.

One thing I'd like to point out - in a club v country row most posters trot out that old "we pay his wages" chestnut but that is a terribly naive view. Remember a player belongs to his country for life, he belonged before you signed him and will still belong after he's left. Current club is merely a temporary stop while his nationality is permanent

say if he becomes a British national

I knew somebody would say that Don't think it would make any difference, he would still be only eligable to play for Cameroon ..........................maybe

all matip needs to do is send a letter. thats all the regs require
IMO this just shows out this reflects on a byegone era when football was like rugby where the top form of the game is internationals.
In fact for football internationals are way below the standard of European competitions and the top 5 leagues in Europe. It is in fact largely irrelevant in terms of anyone caring about what happens.

Daft situation. He's not played for Cameroon since 2015. He wasn't called up in any International fixtures since then because he said he is retired.
They then call him up??? Fvck that.

What I don't get is how can FIFA tell Liverpool what to do like where's their authority over us? Or any football league club?

All in the rules I'm afraid mate.
World football's governing body said that it referred Liverpool to article five of its rules. It states that "a player who has been called up by his association for one of its representative teams is, unless otherwise agreed, not entitled to play for his club during the period for which he has been released, plus an additional period of five days".
I don't think saying the magic words "retire from international football" is a valid get out of jai free card either, It has to agreed by the relevant country.
I suspect a compromise will be found soon, as someone said Cameronn have little to gain.

Ah OK cool cheers makes more sense now, still FIFA can go suck a bag of d!ck$

As far as I know Matip had a falling with with the previous management team and this is a different manager who called him up for the AFCON?

Just seems to be some posturing by some jumped up official. THis also might depend on just WHEN the retirement was announced in writing to the Cameroon FA (assuming he did put it in writing), if it was AFTER the call up then I can understand the problem.

He's not played since Sept 2015 though and he's not been called up in that time either.
He'll play tonight though so it's all good. 💪

I really think our courts have better things to do than decide it Matip can play a few games of football.
------
If your not fussed about a players right to play for the club that employs him then I guess you are right.
Personally I think the matter is quite important for sport. But then you do tend to be contrary just for the sake of it on this forum don't you?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So you genuinely think this is a valuable use of our court's time?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
At least as valuable as some of the HUGE number of frivolous cases brought to the judiciary every day in good old litigious Britain.
