Who to replace Costa?

Simple question. If he does eventually move in the summer and leaves somewhere between 80-100M in the club coffers, who would your pick be to replace him?

From.the fans point of view, if Costa helps Chelsea lift the trophy, then he is not worth selling in this window. From the business and finance prospective, he is worth selling for that amount.

Luckily for us Roman is a fan and thinks like us.

I dont think it would make that much business sense if it cost you the title.

In the current market, you'd need to use, what, around £60m of the £80m to sign a replacement.

That leaves £20m. Surely the league title means a lot more than that in terms of prize money and future revenues?

Daz, on the calendar-year season hampering the league's growth, lt's just hope China don't decide to switch to a European-type calnder like the Russians did.

Either way, the PL and other leagues are more protected than La Liga. Barça and Madrid outwith, not only are wages here far lower, but whether winter or summer, the release clause rule means clubs are powerless to prevent a player from leaving if the clause is met.

Errr no, if we win the title or finish 2nd 3rd or even 4th, wouldn't make that much difference in revenues in the epl. As long you make top.4 so the club doesn't miss out on CL money.

Off course the title is significant trophy, but nothe neccessarily has massive effect on revenues.

Yeah that's a fair point, ioag.

Judging by some of steps the Chinese FA are taking, though, I'm not sure if changing the calendar is a step they'll be willing to take.

I also think with the example of Russia it's worth taking into account that they also changed their schedule to run alongside the champions league, whereas China's already runs alongside theirs so it complicates matters more.

You're overlooking the fact that whoever's top of the league is likely to be shown more on TV, thus landing a higher facility fee.

You're also going to get bigger endorsements, boost marketing sales (happy fans spend more wonga), get paid more for friendlies, broaden your fanbase, etc.

ST prices and gate receipts for the following season are likely to be higher too.

As stated, it's not just the prize money. It also increases other revenue streams and has othher knock-on effects.

Don't think the facility fee would be too different whether Chelsea win the title or finish second.

There will be a few increases in revenue due to winning the league but I'm not sure how much it would be in comparison to the huge fee Chelsea would get for Costa.

But because Chelsea have already sold Oscar for significant money I don't think the financial benefits of Costa outweigh the sporting benefits of keeping him, especially when, as you mention, they'll have to spend a huge portion of that fee on a replacement.

The is only £6m in difference from the champions and 4th place in TV deals.

Chelsea finished 10th last season, but that didn't stop them getting the 2nd biggest sponsor deal in the world. That's because the Chelsea now is a brand that appeals to big sponsors.

The gate receipt won't change that much because the stadium is sold out every home game. Believe it or not Oscar was our biggest shirt seller and we sold him for £60m. Costa is household name but it's likely that he's going to be replaced with another household name, so we're not going to miss out that much.

You may have a point about the growing fan base, but i reckon by not that much though, as I said Chelsea is already an established brand.

Yeah, and I can tell you that wasn't built on 10th-place finishes.

IOAG

The TV deal is evenly spread out in the PL. It's not like Real Madrid and Barca having the lions share

Even the team who finishes bottom of the league gets £97m this season

Probably that's why Wenger is not under pressure to win the title, finishing in top 4 places is a big deal, because your don't want to miss out on the CL money.

Wenger keeps Arsenal's shareholders happy only by finishing in top 4 every season.

I know how it works, Conte'nt. I still think there's more than 20M in winning a league title.
