Manchester City have seen off Premier League rivals to sign 13-year-old Finley Burns from Southend United in a £175,000 deal, which could rise to £250,000.
The talented defender was free to leave Roots Hall in the summer and had attracted attention from Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal after being promoted to Southend’s Under 16 side.
The fee — which is a record for a 13-year-old, and which was revealed in The Times — is a reflection of what Premier League clubs are now willing to pay to sign the best talent.

This is just madness. I hope United never do this.

Parents are the worst thing about kids football at all levels, right down to the under 11s on the local park.

Imagine being this kid though and knowing City have spent this much money on you at that age! Be hard to become an arrogant little cant

We know the family of this young lad I was referring to earlier quite well. They are one of the most successful yet decent people I have ever had the privilege to meet.
The stories they tell are not about the kids getting ahead of themselves. Well certainly not at this age. That comes later.
It's the parents desperate to hawk their kids off to teams that will pay more. City stopped taking the parents abroad with their kids to competitions a couple of years ago and they don't allow parents to go to most other games either for the simple reason they were unsettling the kids.
Kids at that age just want to play. They don't actually see any money until later years and even then they have financial advisors.

That's a great idea by the club, Liverpool have brought in a 40k wage cap for youth team players which is a good start. And if a young lad arrives to Kirby in a flash car they're told to park it next door

I used to train kids football.
What a fwcking thankless task that was. Parents can be utter bell ends trying to relive their useless fwcking lives through a kid who just wants to kick a ball about with bus mates.
