It's Up For Grabs Now!! 1989 Anfield

http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/arsenal-1989-title-hollywood-movie-9654388

It's in the Mirror so not sure how much attention we should pay to this but a film about arguably the greatest single football match in English history would be great.

I remember the day clearly as I had a season long bet of £20 with a mate that we'd win the title (he had Liverpool who won everything in those days) and for some reason I decided to double the bet on the day of the match. God knows why.

I saw the match at home and remember festooning the TV in scarves and writing slogans on my pet Dalmation with a marker (pet abuse was acceptable in the 80s). He escaped and a neighbour brought him back and said that hooligans must have had him as they'd drawn all over him .

We were clear favourites going into the final matches before losing to Derby (I think?) and then drawing 2-2 with Wimbledon to allow Liverpool to close the gap. They beat West Ham 5-0 in their penultimate match which smashed our goal difference so we had to win by 2 clear goals at Anfield in order to claim the title.

Smith scored a header just after half time to put us 1-0 up.

Nothing much happened then until I recall a break in play and McMahon and Barnes motioning to each other in stoppage time that there was only 1 minute left. Lukic then bowled the ball out to the right and then Smith flicked on to the onrushing Thomas who found himself with only Grobelaar to beat.

He clipped it over him into the net in the 92ns minute and then wheeled away before doing a sort of forward roll in celebration. The Gooners went mad in the corner as did the players on the subs bench with Graham trying to calm everyone down.

Great times....

Maybe he could have played him IN 1989. Not sure he could carry off a 20-odd yo now.

I know, it's a disgrace, people almost never talk about that. Clearly this is about the championship's destination that year, I've no doubt Hillsborough will come up in it's influence over that.

I'm only 22 so I wasn't even born..

Surely the City-QPR game was the greatest ending to a league campaign?

1st and second in a stand alone game for the title at the end of the season with the big underdogs fighting against the odds to win a dramatic title.

Or 1st v 10 man team in 17th who were leading until they became mathematically safe and then collapsed with complacency .

For me 89 stands alone. City was amazing, and I am only downplaying it in comparison but lacked a lot that 89 had. For me the only thing the City one had over 89 was the Sky media machine.

Well said. The Aguero game was amazing but the fact that it was against QPR who had zero to play for means that it wasn't as anticipated or ultimately exciting as the 1989 game.

Liverpool were also so dominant during that era and Arsenal hadn't won the title since 1971 that it made the result even more important and memorable.

Also it was played on a Friday night on terrestrial TV so the whole nation watched as opposed to the limited viewers who watch SKY football.
