Ever disappointed you? Basically a Manager you wanted to be in charge of your club or country and based on, your own expectations of what he’d do or how he’d go about it, you’ve felt let down?
If I’ve ever been seriously disappointed with a Chelsea Manager, believe it or not, it was Jose’s conduct in his first stint. Taking a hissy fit cos Roman refused to keep pouring money into a bottomless pit. Making the omelette analogy (bad spelling?) and publicly declaring 9 out of 11 of his team were 'untouchables'.
I wasn’t disappointed in Scolari because I was gutted when we hired him. He was a man who’d been out of club football for quite a while when we hired him and I was completely against his appointment.
Has a Manager for either club or country...

Thing with capello was granted we were sheeet for that tournament, but if that Lampard goal stands we go on to win that game for me. Completely shifted the momentum and would have been a close game

Germany were such a class above England that day. There was no way England were winning, even if Lampards goal stood.
The Germans were simply too good and the defence for England that day was somewhere between all over the place and non existent.

Glenn Hoddle for club and country sadl......
The guy is a genius footballing wise knows it all. Tactically, formation, phases of play. He was saying years ago the next step which would happen is 5 at the back, he spoke about rampaging wing backs. Look no further at what Spurs/Chelsea are doing right now but he was saying this three/four years ago.
Always wanted to play football the right way and lord knows he could play it himself so he knew what he was talking about.
Yet England and Spurs never got to the heights we wanted or hoped.
I firmly believe he could do a good job right now in the premier league with a swansea, middlesboro or even a southampton (again) a club setup for his style of play, without the issues of fans expectations and egotistical players.

You do remember 1998 when England exited the WC after ouplaying Argentina for over 60 minutes with 10 pen only to lose on penalties ?

I do remember yes mate but for reasons i did not wish to dwell on some well documented we didnt achieve anything with Hoddle.
We played amazing agains Argentina and were robbed by the ref but we still lost. Nothing was achieved sadly.

There were a few saying that to be fair, I remember writing an article about it on the old 606. It was more that Hoddle was looking towards Italy and also the increased importance of numbers in midfield, it wasn't genius on his part. Mancini tried it too, it still has flaws.
Thought he was unlucky with England though and agree he would still be a very good coach.

I remember Venables going with a back three for one friendly game (possibly Croatia) and being gobsmacked he only had one central defender playing, flanked by Neville and Pearce I think, and no fullbacks as wingbacks. I was truly amazed .
I think Evans was going with a three at Liverpool then, which was exotic anyway, but with three proper centre halves and actual fullbacks too.

Just looked up that side v Croatia....how gung-ho was that?

Hoddle going with Beckham as a wing back was pretty good too. In the modern game it would probably be Becks best position to be fair.
When he bought him inside v Colombia, dropped Batty (I think), and put Anderton at right wing back we looked the nuts

And that game finished 0-0.

The memory goes, but I am sure it was Southgate that performed that role of centreback/defensive mid during the tournament. Ince suspended for one and Redknapp in?
Yeah, he did it in the Euros but this game was before it. I had never seen anything like it to be honest, even Ardiles in 94 for Spurs had four defenders and a defensive midfielder

Hoddle was a great England manager. Sabotaged by the printed press for not doing what they told him to do.
Yes, his personal 'belief system' was offensive, but that was just an excuse to get him out. After all, the tabloid's themselves perpetuate offensive belief systems in order to shift units. But hey, let's not worry about how hypocrisy cloud's our judgement eh?
playing Beckham at rightback was a masterstroke, but was just one example of why the press were never going to accept him
