Martin Caceres - Worth A Punt?

Morning folks.

I've just had a look at the free agents who are available for transfer.
The only player on that list under 30, is Martin Caceres.
He is an experienced and versatile player.

He can't be worse than Lovren surely?

Caceres is awful. He was seriously lacking in a dominant, possession based Juve team.

Lovren is far better.

I think Lovren will be the next replaced in our back 4, but he's not awful.

He was overpriced and is too erratic, but he's a decent footballer, very good at his best.

Next season I think we will have a new partner for Matip and Lovren will be fighting for minutes with Gomez and Klavan.

Lovren is shocking. He is not very good. Fonte made him look good. You can see he's a liability. Makes it uneasy for others around him, look at yesterday for example, Matip had to concede that penalty because Lovren was caught in no mans land coming out and missing the ball. Every game he has a big mistake in him. He is just not Liverpool quality. We need Van Dijk or Jonathan Tah for next season.

Of course he's worse than Lovren, hence he's a free agent!

Out of interest, have you seen Caceres play?

I only have once that I can remember and he was absolutely unremarkable. It's unlikely you've seen him too many times anyway because he's basically a professional bench warmer / squad player. Albeit at very good clubs.

I checked out his stats, the last time he was anything close to being a regular was 2010 and even that was only 25 league games in a season. He's only played 30+ (common for a first team defender) once in his entire career.

So you're proposing signing a short'ish (under 6ft) centre back who will turn 30 before the season is finished, who has never played in this league and who hasn't been a starter for 6 years. And you think he might replace Lovren in our first team?

On balance I'm going to say no, I suspect that's not the best idea.

lovren isn't a bad player. hes not a lead defender tho. hes a follower. hes ok when the rest of the defence is top notch. if he has a lead cb next to him and a strong defensive lb, then he does fine. I think hed work well on the right of 3 cbs. not a formation for us really atm.

real shame sakho messed up in the summer really. him and matip with Gomez as backup would've been an exciting prospect.

Lovren is much improved under klopp but still makes too many positional mistakes and commits himself far too often. A CB a LB and a striker are looking like beong the priorities this summer.

id love to see a player in the mane mould(younger and none AFCON eligible) tricky with huge pace. as this month has shown, we need depth.
