Conte'nt's 'Europe' article yesterday......

I’ve no idea if it were meant to be a WUM that went wrong………..or right for that matter.

But there is (IMO) some underlying truth to it.

Not because they lack quality etc but some of our clubs are there to make up the numbers.

Last season, I believe Spurs threw a very winnable tie, because in they had “bigger fish to fry". But it’s not just the Europa League that our country show such a blatant disrespect for, but I think we’re doing it with our domestic cups as well.

I don’t care what anyone says, we should be playing Pool at Anfield this weekend. That wasn’t an upset at Wolves. (I know Wolves made changes before someone says) Pool put out a full strength team and it’s Pool vs Chelsea as the ‘tie of the round’. As it stands, IMO there’s no stand out ‘tie of the round’ going into this weekend.

However…………..Back to Europa. I genuinely believe that Spurs team are good enough to win it. Seriously. This is not a dig and it’s also not butt kissing. It’s my opinion. Do I think they’ll win it? No because I think they’ll put out mostly their 2nd stringers/fringe players.

I don’t know how other teams’ fans would feel, but speaking for me, I wanted to win the Europa. I can prove even before the 2012/13 Champions League kicked off that I wanted this. I did an article on here stating this.

I was seriously proud of our success in 2013, firstly it was a trophy. Then it was a trophy we’d never previously won. And it completed the set. United would achieve that same feat were they to win it this season. Even take away the Champions League carrot, I’d still want to win it.

The dilemma Spurs are in is thus:

We do not pay the biggest wages in the division.

To keep our best players, we need to be challenging in the league, and qualifying for the CL. That is the incentive for players to stay at our club. A cash injection too, which I am sure the players are financially rewarded for.

We won a trophy in 2008 for example, but it was not enough for Berbatov and Keane who both left. Bale and Modric both upped sticks after failing to qualify for the CL for 3 years

Winning the Europa would be great, but there are 9 games left to do so. It is a slog that needs managing, otherwise it can be detrimental to league position.

Chelsea and United are in a position to pay huge wages to players to keep them happy without CL football - one by having an owner who the club owes £1bn, the other being the most profitable club in world football.

Other clubs have their own priorities.

We also have the sixth largest turnover in Europe.
That helps pay wages.

As does generating huge commercial revenue which cokes from winning trophies.

Of course Roman's investment made all this possible.

But lose the chip on your shoulder and dry your eyes

It raised the European profile of the Club and combined with the Bridge being done up at the time like a dogs dinner in the sexiest part of London, no wonder someone like Mr. A was gonna take the bait.

You have to spend money to make money. Both ourselves and United have done that, us in the last 10 years, United for over 20 now, and both clubs are financially sustainable as of today. One of the problems Spurs have is an owner who isn't willing to spend money (same as Arsenal, only it's Wenger who isn't willing to spend it).

The old business adage goes if you're not growing you're ultimately dying, and you can't grow in business without taking financial risks. If Spurs manage to win the Europa League, thus gaining CL qualification through that medium (which prioritizing over the PL would resemble a risk), that's a genuine away to attract interest to the club from across Europe by standing out from the PL where various teams currently swamp your popularity, that opens up more revenue streams and generates more money.

He's converted into shares, and club is worth a lot more than when he bought it.

Ambramovich has not converted it to shares.

Last I can see the debt was over a billion, and can be called in with 18 months notice.

He would never do such a thing, we all know that, but its a billion pound down the drain.

Lets not pretend Chelsea are self sufficient like United

Not a knock - he is able to do so.

Just calling it like it is - no Abramovich, no party.

That he wiped Bates' debt means he essentially bankrolled everything from Gullit onwards
