Gazza and Rooney

Arguably the 2 players who when first 'exploded' onto the scene gave the fans of their clubs and country something to get excited about.

Did you ever want these players at your club?

Did they become as good as you expected them to be?

If not was it unrealistic expectancy on your part or do you think things got in the way?

A Manchester United fans at my work says definitely at 19 Rooney was a better player than Ronaldo. But Ronaldo was more dedicated.....whilst he still doesn't think Rooney would've reached Ronaldo's level, he does think his lifestyle hindered him becoming a better player than he could have "and when you think of what he achieved at the level he did reach...."

I personally don't believe we saw the best of what either player could have been.. But perhaps I'm being unfair?!

Certainly Rooney even in 2006 was different to the boy who had us off our seats in Euro 2004.

Gazza? His is one of (from an outsider's view) saddest stories in football, addiction has seen him ruin his life. Perhaps his career?

But with Gazza I'll always wonder what that 1991 injury took away. Was it just time? Or did it take something more from his game?

It's ironic that I'm writing this because I have wanted my club to sign both players at times in their careers. Alas Gazza chose Rangers and Rooney chose a payrise. Although the 1st time I wanted him in 04 I don't think we were in for him.

Never said it was a good or bad thing.

But would you compare an attacking player who helps the team to an attacking player who helps himself

Which attacking player helps the team and who helps themselves?

Rooney was always overrated and a cheat and the English media loved him and still do even though he's now dung.

Proving just how little about football you actually know.

Seriously you must be called John snow in real life.

John Barnes was better than both

Wrong era for him. Had he been around when colour wasn't an issue with fans he would be raved about

Watford, Liverpool and England. I don't think anything held Barnes back apart from the thinking behind the national team setup.

He would of been world player of the year if pool were playing in Europe.

Gazza was definitiely in that 2nd tier of the world's greatest ever players, along with the likes of Henry/Ronaldinho/Best/Rivaldo/Scholes/Iniesta/Rashford

But he was no where near the top top level of world's greatest ever players such as Pele/Maradona/Messi/Ronaldo/Zidane/Rooney

Scholes and Rashford ???? seriously what have u been drinking.

Rooney didn't choose a payrise over Chelsea; he chose a better club. Of course, Chelsea will never be what Man Utd are but back in 2004 the gap was even greater. As I remember you were on the verge of going bust and I was looking forward to it as the fans were rotten. With global exposure and new overseas fans that rot has been watered down somewhat.
