John Stones

While I know he gets a lot of stick on here and a lot of it is deserved, I do think of he was playing with 3 decent defenders with him rather than Kolorov, Sagna and Clichy he would be able to develop at a more sensible level rather than needing to be world class now when everyone around him is making as many mistakes as him.

What I saw of him last night in the second half looked promising. Time after time after time he instigated City attacks by bringing the ball out of defence and surging forward with it pushing Monaco onto the back foot. It was an interesting change from the first half and from an English perspective it was quite rare to see that. It really changed the way the game flowed. Monaco were on the back foot and you could have scored a few.

We all know he has concentration issues and is often a mistake waiting to happen but if he can fix that he has other tools which make him a potentially very good CB.

And again, from an English perspective that is good for you guys. But it would help if you could provide him with a decent CB partner. That would help for both club and country.

Always said Stones will be class and I stand by it. He's had a meteoric rise to the top in the past few years and a bad injury in that time too. Can't help but feel he is in the right place either.

I have always thought he was overrated and stand by that.

At Everton people said his teammates were the problem and with better players he would stand out.

Well poor or not, he is playing with better players now and still doesn't stand out, now apparently it's those better players to blame and he needs even better ones to stand out more.

For me he's just not that good and even with new players I don't see him ever being the player that some think he will be.

I think people forget how young Stones is for a CB.

As point of comparison at 22 years old:

Rio Ferdinand had just moved to Leeds and was making quite a few errors. Far cry from the defender he became.

Sol Campbell was in his breakthrough season at Spurs.

John Terry was in his second regular season at Chelsea but probably his first 'full' season.

Personally I think he's doing fine; learning and improving in a less than certain back 5. I think there is a quality defender within John Stones.

He has stood out though. Considerably.

Can we convince Laporte to come this year? Didnt fancy it apparently last year but hes ideal to play alongside Stones. We really do need consistency at the back (and learn to not use Kolarov as a CB). Obviously full backs being wildly out of position hasnt helped also. Rose and another rb?
