The hardest position to fill is WB.

And we have the players there for once.

The likes of Henderson and Llallana would not make Bayern reserves, let alone Germany's

It's getting results because it suits the players though. Put Moses, Alonso, Cahill and Luiz in a back four they would look pretty awful. Those two cms make that system work plus Conte of course.

People blindly putting three at the back just because Chelsea do is a hipster fad.

I think it is a very well considered option. 3 at the back often suits when you dont have top class individual CBs, there is 3 of them so cover is easier. Dier plays as part of a 3 as does Cahill...2 best defences in the league, while not being exceptional players. Stones has defensive weaknesses but is superb on the ball and would have more freedom to express this in a 3.

Also suits flying wing backs and Eng/Spurs have 2 of the very best.

The CM/DM is also key and this is perhaps where it falls down for Eng. Hendo aint a DM and nor is Wilshere. You need some real discipline and energy in this role - There is no real English Wanyama & Kante, Livermore certainly aint it either.

Well back then there was resistance to leaving 4 4 2. Another midfielder could have accommodated in a 3 man midfield

I think your back 4 shows how bad times have kinda got?!

At one point we had a JT, Rio, Woodgate, King (who defied logic) Campbell and Carragher - that was just at CB .....That was an embarrassment of riches.
