Hernandez Suspended!

After reviewing footage of the match between Newcastle and Leeds, the FA have seen fit to hand a 3 match suspension to Pablo Hernandez for his vicious assault on Jonjo Shelvey.

Quite right too. The footage clearly shows a deliberate and premeditated headbutt on Shelvey's foot.

Rafael Benitez had this to say: "This kind of behaviour is uncalled for in the modern game and I'm glad justice has been done to set an example to any youngsters watching. Now, would you like to see the wine list?"

Garry Monk was unavailable to comment but Pep Clotet gave us this short statement: "is.....is this a joke?"

Remember Gary Kelly who used to head the ball occasionally when it was 2 inches from the floor? Well if someone had tried to kick the ball and caught Kelly in the head is it a red card? Of course not. The fact Hernandez stoops to head is the decisive factor in the decision.

On the other hand the referee, if harsh, could well have sent off Shelvey in injury time for 2 bookable offences within seconds of one another.

C4 Delaying restart of the game.
C2 Showing dissent by word or action (sarcastic clapping of the referee)

Pablo wasn't 2 inches from the floor 🙈

He stopped 2 inches...not the same really is it

Shelvey's a hard case whichever way you cut it .

Who was that similarly bald buqqer we signed from Vile Derby the year before we got relegated from the Prem? Saw him at Elland Road ( vs Newcastle, funnily enough ) .. within 5 minutes of kick-off, he committed one of the worst fouls I've seen .. a two-footed drop-kick to the guts .. Souness himself might have blushed .. no red, no yellow, nothing ( thank God , we just clung on for a 2-2 draw in the end ) .

stop talking about how bad it looks in slow motion, of course it looks bad when you slow it down.

http://thesetpieces.com/features/pieces-of-hate-slow-motion-replays/

"Finally, slow motion replays have given us the hoary old cliche that, “it looks worse in slow motion.” Of course it bloody does. Even innocuous tackles can look like aggravated assault when you run them in slow motion. If you take footage of a player who arrives a split second too late and slow it down, obviously it looks like the player has more time react and has just clobbered the opponent anyway. Watch it four or five times and it’s time to get the pitchforks out and chase the poor bloke out of the country."

Good point MattyP. The game is played at normal speed and the refs who are moving too have to make decisions on the spot. They get most right. Not easy!

Definitely splitting opinions this one. I think this 'the football league and the refs are out to get us stuff from some fans is complete bollox. I do, however, think we got jack from this ref on Friday (until he missed the ayling penalty shout) he seemed like a homey to me, but it happens and evens itself out.

A week ago I was lambasting cooper for what was a stupid sly thing to do, but I don't think he put his full weight down and was unlikely to cause serious injury. 6 week ban. Fair enough.

Shelvey had full line of sight of an opponent who couldn't see him and went in high and reckless (imo) and kicks a guy in the head. But the laws say it's not even a card. Yes pablo is a short a*se and yes he ducked a bit to head the ball, but I'm genuinely surprised that some think it's ok.

Can't speak for others but I'd think it was a bad tackle if a Leeds player made it.

Guess it's one of those that people see differently. Maybe we should just accept that and move on rather than imply that everyone who doesn't agree with our perspective is an idiot.

Agreed Walsall!

The head being low is a red herring. Take that away and assume that Pablo moves forward to chest the ball. Shelvey's leg ends up in his midriff at best, chest at worse.

Going into a tackle late with the leg raised, straight and studs showing is dangerous and reckless.

Saying the game has gone soft is irrelevant! The rules are clear and the ref got it wrong - or more likely he bottled it.

That tackle from a a Leeds player or from Shelvey at ER would have probably produced a different response from the officials.

Should give players helmets and make it a no contact sport, that's kinda what they're doing. Did anyone see Seb Larssons red against man u? Classic 50/50 and he got sent off as he went in a touch too hard against a player who is notorious for hard tackles. Refs are ruining the game with stupid and inconsistent decisions
